O’Scanlon Praises Bi-partisan Cooperation

Legal barriers to sports betting at Monmouth Park were removed today thanks to a bi-partisan effort lead by Senator Declan O’Scanlon, according to an announcement by the NJ Senate Republicans.
The legislation to regulate sports betting was amended today to remove a provision which would have barred any entity that takes sports bets in NJ prior to the bill becoming law from getting a sports betting license. The amended bill passed both houses of the legislature and now goes to Governor Phil Murphy for his signature. Concerns were raised earlier this week that Murphy would hold up signing the bill as part of budget negotiations with the legislature.

While much of the media is reporting how poorly U.S. Senator Bob Menendez performed in the Democrat primary yesterday, I couldn’t miss how poorly Josh Welle, address none of your business, performed against former Asbury Park Councilman Jim Keady, Spring Lake, in the 4th congressional district primary.
With all three county party lines, more money and the endorsement of his former landlord, State Senator and honorary volunteer firefighter Vin Gopal, Welle only got 57% of the vote against Keady’s 43%.
Congressman Chris Smith, Hamilton, overperformed expectations, especially given that he was unopposed in the CD-4 Republican primary.

Golden: Curley is tone deaf, disgraceful and puts himself first

Disgraced Freeholder John Curley was Censured and Reprimanded for sexual harassment.
Disgraced Freeholder John P. Curley filed to run for reelection as an Independent candidate this afternoon. NewJerseyGlobe was the first to report his candidacy and said he submitted over 400 signatures. In a press release, Curley said he would run under the banner, “Fighting Corruption Together.”
Curley compared himself to former Freeholders Ted Narozanick and Barbara McMorrow. “This Freeholders (sic) seat has a rich, bipartisan history of individuals that put people first, from Ted Narozanick to Barbara McMorrow, and people recognize that I am continuing their tradition. I look forward to serving the residents of Monmouth County for another three years,” he said in his release.
Monmouth County Republican Chairman, Sheriff Shaun Golden issued the following statement upon learning of Curley’s candidacy:

Dennis Drazin and his partners at Monmouth Park were ready to accept sports bets on Memorial Day weekend. They wisely didn’t after Senate President Steve Sweeney announced he was inserting a provision in the state legislation regulating sports betting that would prohibit anyone who took bets before the regulations were passed from getting a license.
Sweeney was looking out for the Atlantic City Casinos who weren’t ready to take bets yet. In the meantime, Delaware passed their spots betting regulations and bets will start being taken there today. New Jersey loses out again.
What was considered a two or three week delay while legislation was passed now threatens to deprive New Jersey’s racetracks and casinos of sports betting revenue, and the related jobs, for a third or more of their summer season. According to a report on Politico, Governor Murphy is prepared to hold the sports betting bill as a chip to play as he negotiates his first state budget with the more moderate Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin.

Josh Welle, address none of your business, seems to think he has the Democrat nomination in the 4th Congressional District locked up before any of the votes have been counted.
The primary election between Welle and former Asbury Park councilman Jim Keady is tomorrow, June 5.
The Welle campaign has a meet and greet scheduled for Tuesday evening, June 12 in Ocean Grove.

Someone should tell Welle that the Monmouth County Democrats are having a convention that night.

Atlantic Highlands Councilman Stephen Boracchia took to facebook yesterday evening and demonstrated why the Regular Republicans, who have been controlling the local party for the last several years, have lost 4 of the last 5 contested municipal offices.
Boracchia impugned the integrity of the Monmouth County Republican Organization team of candidates for promoting the fact that they do indeed have the support of the Monmouth County Republican Organization. Boracchia, who’s wife is a Regular Republican candidate for County Committee in District 4, implied that his military service makes him a good arbiter of other people’s integrity, while he inaccurately stated that the Monmouth County Republican Organization slogan is not an endorsement.
