MANALAPAN- Township Attorney Roger McLaughlin said that the Township’s position regarding the proposed pig farm on the 123 acre property on the corner of Route 33 and Millhurst Road is that a pig farm is not a permitted use.
Speaking during the Township Committee’s public meeting on Wednesday night, McLaughlin said that the Committee had discussed the “press release” about the pig farm that owner Joe Spano plans for his property during executive session and that they had determined that the property, in a VC (Village Commercial) zone is not permitted to be a farm. “Farming is not a permitted use in the VC zone,” McLaughlin said. “There has been no application for a farm. If there is an application, it will be denied. Farming is permitted in most zones, but not the VC zone.”
(MoreMonmouthMusings reported on Spano’s plans last week. Spano did not issue a press release.)

Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone
As I have mentioned before, one of the most rewarding organizations I am involved in is the Monmouth Ocean Foundation for Children (MOFFC). I share this honor with our Monmouth County Sheriff, Shaun Golden, as we are both members of the board of directors. As the vice chairman of the board, I am working with MOFFC leadership to develop a facility for adults with autism because they “age out” of the current services available within our county at 21 years of age. This facility would provide programming, services, therapies, and life skills training. These adults with special needs deserve a safe environment where they can continue to thrive and learn.
I am pleased to say we are extremely close to making this program a reality and I am currently working on the funding sources for it. I hope to have more specific details on this important and exciting project in the weeks to come.

Belmar Mayor “Lawless Matt” Doherty just can’t stand the fact that residents of his community had the audacity to gather in front of his home to protest the fact that his administration is screwing over one small business in town while he his arranging for a major donor to his freeholder campaign land a helicopter in a borough park while patronizing another business.

The Jersey Shore is once again in trouble, and if it seems officials are having difficulty communicating why, it’s with good reason. We’ve never seen anything quite like Hermine. There’s Sandy, of course, but that storm barreled into the coast with reckless abandon. There’s Irene or Floyd, but those zipped through New Jersey leaving a greater… Read the rest of this entry »

Developer Joe Spano seems to be resigned that the property he owns at the corner of Route 33 and Millhurst Road will remain a farm, after being thwarted in numerous attempts over the last thirteen years to get an acceptable development approved by the Manalapan Township Committee. But soy beans and corn crops are not coming close to covering expenses and providing a fair return on the roughly $20 million Spano says has been invested in the property through his former company, Manalapan Retail Realty Partners, and his current company, Village at Manalapan Properties.
