Ciattarelli: The Governor is Wrong on Borrowing

Democratic Legislative leadership has announced they are backing Governor Phil Murphy’s plan to borrow billions to balance New Jersey’s state budget. 

The Governor and Democrats are wrong for advancing this unprecedented scheme. There is no immediate need to borrow. The state’s Fiscal Year 2020, which ends September 30^th, is balanced and includes a $500+ million surplus. Contrary to what the Governor claims, we are not running out of cash nor are we in danger of not being able to pay our bills. Why are we rushing to incur tremendous debt?

Atlanta Braves won’t change their name, might chop the chant

ATLANTA — Announcements by the Washington NFL team and the Cleveland Indians that they will consider name changes have raised questions about whether the Atlanta Braves will do likewise.

The team’s top executive, Terry McGuirk, has an unambiguous answer.“We are so proud of our team’s name, and our expectation is that we will always be the Atlanta Braves,” said McGuirk, the Braves’ chairman.

Ex-Rutgers cancer doc accused of filming women in the bathroom, admits theft, gets off with 300 days in jail

A former Rutgers professor and director at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey who was accused of filming women in a workplace bathroom was sentenced to 300 days in jail, court documents show.

James Goydos, 60, faced 160 charges, including more than 100 counts of invasion of privacy. He pleaded guilty in December to only six: burglary, impersonation, official misconduct, possession of an assault weapon and two counts of computer theft.

Hong Kong democracts hold primary despite security law warning

Hong Kong (AFP) – Pro-democracy parties in Hong Kong held primary polls on Saturday to choose candidates for upcoming legislative elections despite warnings from government officials that it may be in breach of a new security law imposed by China.

Thousands queued in the intense summer heat at unofficial polling stations across the city hours after police raided an opinion pollster helping to conduct the vote.

Even as N.J. reopens, there’s a big spike in unemployment claims. Here’s why.

More than 47,000 new claims poured into the unemployment offices during the week ending July 4, fueling the biggest single-week spike the state Labor Department has seen since early May.

Furloughed state employees and workers laid off when the school year ended in June account for much of that, the Department of Labor said Thursday.

Text messaging was Sue Fulton’s safety plan for reopening MVC

Shaun Golden, Jack Ciattarelli, Jon Bramnik and Doug Steinhardt have all been too hard on MVC Commissioner Sue Fulton for her lack of planning to safely reopen New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission facilities.

The Republicans, each a potential gubernatorial candidate against Prince Philip Dunton Murphy next year, have been relentless this week in their criticism of MVC’s reopening to long lines in the heat and humidity, lack of social distancing, fights, and drivers camping overnight to get their cars registered and licenses renewed or issued.
