China today announced sanctions against Congressman Chris Smith, Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz and Ambassador for Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, according to multiple media reports.

The sanctions, which are as yet unspecified, will “correspond” to sanctions imposed upon Chinese officials by the Trump Administration last week over the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in its Xinjiang region.

Hong Kong democracts hold primary despite security law warning

Hong Kong (AFP) – Pro-democracy parties in Hong Kong held primary polls on Saturday to choose candidates for upcoming legislative elections despite warnings from government officials that it may be in breach of a new security law imposed by China.

Thousands queued in the intense summer heat at unofficial polling stations across the city hours after police raided an opinion pollster helping to conduct the vote.

“The more Hong Kong people were suppressed, the firmer Hong Kong people stand,” democracy campaigner Benny Tai, a legal scholar and co-organiser of the primary, said as voting got underway… Read the rest of this entry »

Smith’s bill would allow Americans to sue China for COVID-19 related losses

Congressman Chris Smith

Legislation introduced by Congressmen Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Ron Wright (R-TX) on Friday would strip China and other countries of their sovereign immunity if they intentionally made misrepresentations regarding the coronavirus, thereby allowing U.S. citizens, businesses and local government to sue those governments for the deaths, pain and suffering, and economic losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Joint Chiefs chairman: U.S. probing whether coronavirus escaped a Chinese lab

(USA Features) U.S. intelligence agencies are currently investigating whether the coronavirus may have escaped from a Chinese lab in Wuhan city where research is done on highly contagious diseases, according to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

U.S. Army Gen. Mark Milley told reporters at the Pentagon Tuesday that initial information indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be a “natural” event that stemmed from animal-to-human transmission.

But he also noted published reports indicating that the virus may have occurred after escaping a research lab.“It should be no surprise that… Read the rest of this entry »

China’s deception on coronavirus – here’s how we hold their leadership accountable

Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ4)

By Congressman Chris Smith

Last December, when it became obvious China faced a deadly disease of historic dimensions, Xi Jinping and his government went into damage control mode.

We are not talking about controlling the terrible damage wrought by COVID-19 among humans, but rather the damage to China’s reputation as an emerging global leader, fearing that a carefully crafted, but bogus image would be damaged as more people around the world succumbed to COVID-19.

The world must stand against China’s war on religion

By Congressman Chris Smith

Mihrigul Tursun said she pleaded with God to end her life as her Chinese jailers increased the electrical currents coursing through her body. Tursun, a Muslim Uighur whose escape led her to the United States in September, broke down weeping at a Nov. 28 congressional hearing as she recounted her experience in one of China’s infamous political “ re-education centers.”

It is an appalling story but one that is all too familiar as existential threats to religious freedom rise in President Xi Jinping’s China. The world can’t ignore what’s happening there. We must all stand up and oppose these human rights violations.

The ruling Chinese Communist Party has undertaken the most comprehensive attempt to manipulate and control — or destroy — religious communities since Chairman Mao Zedong made the eradication of religion a goal of his disastrous Cultural Revolution half a century ago. Now Xi, apparently fearing the power of independent religious belief as a challenge the Communist Party’s legitimacy, is trying to radically transform religion into the party’s servant, employing a draconian policy known as sinicization.

Under sinicization, all religions and believers must comport with and aggressively promote communist ideology — or else.
