Gov. Phil Murphy had a new message Friday for critics who think his coronavirus restrictions in New Jersey are too harsh: Head south to Georgia, where the governor is suing Atlanta’s mayor for mandating face masks despite new cases ticking up across the state.
“If you don’t like our leadership here, why don’t you go down to Georgia and see how that feels,” Murphy said during his daily coronavirus briefing.
“We need responsible leadership in this country right now in every place,” he added. “I know there are folks on both sides of the aisle throwing themselves and doing everything they can now. W… Read the rest of this entry »
Last-minute bid for changes to legislation fails; some lawmakers sought to ensure Black and Latino representation on panel that will review borrowing proposals
Despite passionate calls to add diversity to the process, the Legislature sent Gov. Phil Murphy legislation Thursday that gives a panel of four state lawmakers power to determine the fate of up to $9.9 billion in emergency borrowing.
Gov. Phil Murphy wants a plan in place to borrow billions without voter approval; now legislators are ready to sign off one to make that happen. A revamped version of emergency-borrowing legislation is set to go before lawmakers for the first time Tuesday.
China today announced sanctions against Congressman Chris Smith, Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz and Ambassador for Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, according to multiple media reports.
The sanctions, which are as yet unspecified, will “correspond” to sanctions imposed upon Chinese officials by the Trump Administration last week over the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in its Xinjiang region.
A great deal has been said about reopening New Jersey schools in the fall while ensuring that children remain healthy and safe. But worries are also surfacing about what going back will mean for teachers — and even whether enough of them will be willing to return to the classroom.
More than 47,000 new claims poured into the unemployment offices during the week ending July 4, fueling the biggest single-week spike the state Labor Department has seen since early May.
Furloughed state employees and workers laid off when the school year ended in June account for much of that, the Department of Labor said Thursday.
The jump comes weeks after falling unemployment claims. More than 1.3 million New Jersey workers have filed for unemployment since mid-March — the beginning of the pandemic, which forced much of the state to effectively shut down to curb the spread of coronavirus, le… Read the rest of this entry »

Before the doors even opened this morning hundreds of drivers were lined up waiting to get in to state Motor Vehicle commission agencies for the first time in three months, leading police to shutdown one MVC agency due to crowding and to breakup a fight at another agency.
Police in Lodi said they closed the agency at 7:42 a.m. due to overwhelming demand and told drivers to avoid the area and try a different agency or to come another day.
County sheriff officers also shut down a line at the Oakland agency and told people to go home. A reader reported lines at the Wallington agency were also shut… Read the rest of this entry »
