Congressman Smith Statement on JCP&L Withdraw of Petition

Congressman Chris Smith and Freeholder Lillian Burry

Congressman Chris Smith and Freeholder Lillian Burry

FREEHOLD, N.J. – Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-04) today issued a statement regarding Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L) and Mid-Atlantic Interstate Transmission, LLC (MAIT) withdrawing their petition to the Board of Public Utilities for the transfer of some of JCP&L’s transmission assets to MAIT.

“I am encouraged that Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L) has withdrawn its petition to the Board of Public Utilities for the transfer of some of JCP&L’s transmission assets to a new sister company,” Smith said. “Had it been approved, I believe it would have made it easier for JCP&L to build the Monmouth County Reliability Project, which I believe is ill-conceived and not in the best interest of the residents. There is still more to be done to protect the citizens of Monmouth County from the potential negative effects of these proposed high voltage transmission lines, and I will continue to work with the residents and grassroots efforts to complete this task. I have a meeting with NJ Transit next week to do just that, and will continue working with other officials in this regard.”

Manalapan Attorney: Pig Farm Not Permitted, Spano: Yes It Is

1059009231_3f964fc902_bMANALAPAN- Township Attorney Roger McLaughlin said that the Township’s position regarding the proposed pig farm on the 123 acre property on the corner of Route 33 and Millhurst Road is that a pig farm is not a permitted use.

Speaking during the Township Committee’s public meeting on Wednesday night, McLaughlin said that the Committee had discussed the “press release” about the pig farm that owner Joe Spano plans for his property during executive session and that they had determined that the property, in a VC (Village Commercial) zone is not permitted to be a farm.  “Farming is not a permitted use in the VC zone,” McLaughlin said.  “There has been no application for a farm. If there is an application, it will be denied.  Farming is permitted in most zones, but not the VC zone.”

(MoreMonmouthMusings reported on Spano’s plans last week.  Spano did not issue a press release.)

PIG FARM PLANNED FOR MANALAPAN

pig-herd

Developer Joe Spano seems to be resigned that the property he owns at the corner of Route 33 and Millhurst Road will remain a farm, after being thwarted in numerous attempts over the last thirteen years to get an acceptable development approved by the Manalapan Township Committee.  But soy beans and corn crops are not coming close to covering expenses and providing a fair return on the roughly $20 million Spano says has been invested in the property through his former company, Manalapan Retail Realty Partners, and his current company, Village at Manalapan Properties.

Highlands Mayor Frank Nolan will not seek a third term

Highlands Mayor Frank Nolan announced on facebook last night that he will not seek a third term.

Thank you to so many people for encouraging me to run for a third term as mayor. The past six years have been tough with Irene, Sandy, and all the other set backs. Last year was the toughest with my own personal health issues. Those that are closest to me know I have truly enjoyed being an elected official for the past ten years. I am honored and humbled to have been able to serve the town and all its people. I made some mistakes but tried my best to always do the right thing. My role as a father and husband has to come first. For this reason I will not be a candidate for mayor this November and will serve out my current term. I want to thank all the great borough professionals, past and present I have had the pleasure of working with. The many council people and Mayor’s who I may have had my differences with but at the end of the day I think we knew our common goal was the advancement of the town. Special thanks to my wife and soulmate Lori Ann. You have stood by me through thick and thin and I love you forever.

Soldier On: From homelessness to home ownership for military veterans

SoldierOn1Between 50 and 100 Monmouth County homeless military veterans will have homes, security and futures to look forward to thanks to the tenacity of Freeholder Lillian Burry, Congressman Chris Smith and Soldier On, a non-profit organization committed to ending veteran homelessness.

Since 1994, Soldier On has been providing homeless veterans with transitional housing and supportive services. In 2010, Soldier On opened the first Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community, a permanent housing cooperative that provides formerly homeless veterans with safe, sustainable, affordable housing – transitioning them from homelessness to home ownership. This housing model will be replicated nationally as Soldier On continues to change the end of the story for homeless veterans throughout the country.
