The first sign of trouble at Donovan’s Reef Beach Bar in Sea Bright came before even entering the longtime Jersey Shore beachfront hangout rebuilt after being destroyed in Hurricane Sandy.
A bouncer advised the line waiting anxiously for some Saturday night fun that the wait could be a while due to a fight being broken up. A bar fight didn’t bode well for the required social distancing ordered for outdoor restaurants in the age of coronavirus.
Once beyond the entrance, I walked the ramp to the upper level of the expansive outdoor bar and surveyed the scene — a sea of 20-somethings in crop tops a… Read the rest of this entry »
If there’s an indication of demand for the state Motor Vehicle Commission’s agencies to reopen, it might be the people who showed up at the Bakers Basin agency in Lawrence Township on Tuesday, looking for answers, even though it won’t open for another six days.
Opening day for agencies is June 29, and it will only be for limited transactions that can’t be done online. MVC officials have to process a three-month backlog of these transactions and make sure customers follow the new rules to prevent spread of the coronavirus.

Travelers coming to New Jersey from states where coronavirus cases are spiking must quarantine for 14 days, according to a new travel advisory announced by Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday.
The announcement was made along with the governors of New York and Connecticut, which all agreed to the restriction. The travel advisory takes effect at midnight Wednesday.
“We’ve been clobbered by this virus. No region in this country has paid a bigger price,” Murphy said during a joint appearance by the governors. “This is a smart thing to do he said. We have taken our people, these three states, to hell and b… Read the rest of this entry »
“Today, I signed onto a resolution that just strikes me as peculiar. Peculiar in the sense that I never would have imagined the need for this to exist in a democracy. SCR-117 is intended to curtail the Governor’s power to issue emergency executive orders without reapproval by the legislature every 15 days. It’s a proposed constitutional amendment that if passed, would create a ballot question potentially altering our State’s constitution and let the public decide whether a Governor needs to have their power more frequently checked by the Legislature.
Senator Declan O’Scanlon, Jr. announced today that he is celebrating the reopening of New Jersey’s restaurants with by patronizing 30 Monmouth County eateries in 30 days.
O’Scanlon launched his tour this morning at Sissy’s at the Harbor in Atlantic Highlands.
Last week while Governor Phil Murphy was violating his own Executive Orders and keeping his knee on the neck of New Jersey’s small businesses, former Governor Chris Christie took two significant steps in his political comeback.
Senator Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) said today that local governments have a right and obligation not to turn on the residents they are sworn to serve, at the behest of a higher level of government.
Speaking about Asbury Park’s resolution passed on Wednesday allowing the City’s restaurants to open for indoor dining on June 15, in defiance of Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 152, O’Scanlon said:
Coronavirus is a moving target, but NJ’s health care professionals now know telemedicine, sharing data and stockpiling PPE can mean difference between life and death
A cough and a fever aren’t always among the warning signs. Nearly one-third of those infected don’t show symptoms. Telemedicine really can be integrated into our health care practices. Stocking 90 days worth of supplies makes sense, even if they tell you otherwise in business school.
Governor Murphy this weekend showed the New Jersey citizens how to gather closely in large groups while avoiding being ticketed for violating his Executive Order limiting public gatherings to 25 people.
New Jersey’s response to the pandemic inside nursing homes was “an unmitigated failure” that led to “preventable deaths,” a group of anonymous health department employees charged in a letter to lawmakers Monday. Moreover, the administration “is making things up as they proceed” in order to reopen the economy, the writers also allege.
The letter, sent to Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, and Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr., R-Union and obtained by NJ Advance Media, also calls for the resignation of Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli and an investigation into other top admin… Read the rest of this entry »
