Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal is having a bad day year.
The Dems have put their eggs in the LD 11 basket this year, hoping to pick off one or two of New Jersey’s only all female
legislative delegation in Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande.
Vin made sure that his county candidates for Clerk and Freeholder are residents of the 11th, in hopes that a hometown turnout boost for the county candidates, who are hardly campaigning elsewhere in the county, might help Eric Houghtaling of Neptune and Joann Downey of Freehold over the finish line.
Only in the 11th will you find a typical election year showing of road and lawn signs. Houghtaling and Downey are advertising on ESPN and even FoxNews.
Gopal has historically been able to count on an assist from the Asbury Park Press. Not this year and not where he needs it most.
In endorsing Angelini and Casagrande, APP called them “among the strongest legislators in New Jersey.”

Asbury Park, NJ- Mayor John Moor announced today that he is supporting Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon and Freeholder John P. Curley in the general election on November 3.
“John and Christine have both been great public officials and have served the citizens of Asbury Park with passion and integrity,” said Mayor Moor.
“Asbury Park has had legally contested elections in recent years. I witnessed Hanlon’s honest and level headed efforts first hand as she dealt with those controversies as a member of the Board of Elections. I have no doubt that Monmouth County elections, and all of the important functions of the Clerk’s Office will be conducted with fairness and integrity so long as Christine remains at the helm.”
“John Curley and all of the Monmouth County Freeholders have been very responsive to Asbury Park. This summer when we had a health concern at Sunset Lake, Curley himself showed up with Health Department personnel,” Moor continued, “That kind of dedication and attention is what Freeholder Curley is all about”
“Asbury Park has a great relationship with Monmouth County. Hanlon and Curly personify excellence in public service. They deserve to be elected on November 3.”

I will be working hard to help them secure the support they need to continue to bring both parties together to solve problems.”
The 11th Legislative District, which includes Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Colts Neck, Deal, Eatontown, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Interlaken, Loch Arbour, Long Branch, Neptune City, Neptune Township, Ocean Township, Red Bank, Shrewsbury Borough, Shrewsbury Township, Tinton Falls, and West Long Branch, is the only district in New Jersey that is represented by an all female delegation in the legislature. Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon
The Asbury Park Press endorsed Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon for her own five year term.
Hanlon became Acting Clerk on April 1st upon M.Claire French’s retirement and Clerk on May 18 when the New Jersey State Senate unanimously confirmed her nomination. Except for incorrectly referring to Hanlon as still Acting Clerk, APP nailed the endorsement.
Our endorsement goes to Hanlon, 47, of Ocean Township, who during her short tenure has made the office’s services more convenient to the community through satellite offices and a mobile facility. She also has improved the clerk’s website and more widely disseminated information about the clerk’s role. She deserves a full term.
APP correctly noted that Hanlon’s education and distinguished legal career makes her more suited for the position than the background of her opponent, Freehold Councilman Kevin Kane. Kane is the operations manager of his father’s janitorial service.
