The first topic this week I would like to provide an update is our efforts at the Monmouth County Reclamation Center. It continues to be our mission to eliminate the odors emitted at the site.
As you may know, the County purchased an odor neutralizer that continues to be applied directly to the most critical areas, as well as other areas as needed. We will continue these efforts until the odor is under control. This remains a top priority for us at the County and we look forward to continuing an open dialogue with those impacted by this situation.

Gerry Scharfenberger
MMM has learned that Monmouth County Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger will seek the Republican nomination for State Assembly in the 13th legislative district for the seat currently held by Assemblywoman Amy Handlin. Handlin announced last fall that she will not seek reelection.
Scharfenberger is expected to join Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso on the top the the ballot in LD 13 in the June 4 primary and the November 5 general election. DiMaso filed her petition for the nomination last week.

Millie Gonzalez of Union Beach, Ms Wheelchair NJ, is honored by the Monmouth County Freeholders
I hope everyone is staying warm, happy and healthy this winter season. It sure has been cold the last few days but on the bright side, summer is only a little more than 100 days away!
It has been an eventful few weeks at the County. During our last Freeholder meeting, the Freeholders honored the new Ms. Wheelchair New Jersey, Millie Gonzalez from Union Beach. Millie’s accomplishments are incredible and she is a true inspiration to us all for overcoming so many obstacles and achieving her goals. The Board looks forward to continuing our support for her in Little Rock, Arkansas where she will compete in the Ms. Wheelchair America 2020 competition this July! Read the rest of this entry »

Happy October! It’s hard to believe were already in the midst of the fall season but, like all seasons in Monmouth County, there is always plenty to do! Make sure to check out our Grown in Monmouth and Monmouth County Tourism websites for upcoming events and activities.
I’d like to focus on one topic in particular for this week’s letter and that is the upcoming Pound the Pavement for Purple 5k and 2-mile walk in Neptune and Neptune City this Saturday, October 6th. This annual race is presented by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Neptune Township Committee. I’m proud to serve as a co-founder of this race with Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling.

Monmouth County Freeholder Deputy Director Lillian Burry said that she is one of the many people who have been abused by disgraced Freeholder John P. Curley. “Don’t lose sight of that Freeholder Curley has a history of abusing people, individually and collectively,” Burry said during a meeting of the Board last week.
Burry said that she was personally threatened by Freeholder Curley during a closed meeting in 2013. “With pointed fingers he said, ‘I will get you,’ I mean it was really unnerving and everybody sitting there could feel that way.”

I hope everyone is having a great summer! I cannot believe we’re just a few weeks away from Labor Day!
The Monmouth County Department of Public Works and Engineering has been extremely busy this summer working on numerous projects throughout the county. As liaison to this department, I am happy to report on the status of several of these projects. I would also like to thank our County employees who worked long hours to repair numerous bridges and roadways damaged during last week’s rain event. It is because of their hard work that nearly all bridges damaged during the storm have since been re-opened.

Hello! I hope everyone is continuing to enjoy the summertime sunshine and warm weather!
I would like to take the time to provide an update on the County’s Grown in Monmouth program. As liaison to the County’s division of economic development, I could not be more proud of the success of this program.
For those who have not heard about this initiative, Grown in Monmouth focuses on the retention and expansion of our County’s agricultural industry through the promotion of Monmouth-grown agricultural products and services. We know how important this industry is in Monmouth County and this program helps business owners showcase their products.

Over 400 Monmouth County Republicans and guests from throughout New Jersey gathered at Bar A in Lake Como on Wednesday night for the 9th Annual Summer Kickoff hosted by Sheriff Shaun Golden, Freeholder Director Tom Arnone and County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon.
U.S Senate nominee Bob Hugin and NJ GOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt were on hand to celebrate Hugin’s decisive victory (and Senator Bob Menendez’s poor performance) in the primary the previous day.

Spring is finally here! It’s great to see the trees and flowers begin to bloom and show signs that warmer weather is on its way. I hope everyone has been able to enjoy time outside and hopefully visit some Grown in Monmouth properties!
I’d like to thank everyone who participated in Earth Day events throughout the County, including beach sweeps and property cleanups. I had the chance to visit with volunteers who were cleaning up the area surrounding Shark River.
