Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry has submitted the required petitions to seek the Monmouth County Republican Committee’s endorsement for her 6th term on the Board.
First elected in the wake of U.S. Attorney Chris Christie’s Operation Bid Rig II in 2005, Burry has been a leader in the transformation of Monmouth County government and the Monmouth GOP from a corrupt swamp to a beacon of good government. In 2005 , the Asbury Park Press had an ongoing investigative series, Club Monmouth, into the wasteful patronage of Monmouth County government. This year, the APP editorial board said, “It isn’t easy finding major weaknesses in the way the county has been run in recent years. Spending has been kept in check and the county has maintained a triple-A bond rating. It takes shared services between towns seriously and it has made concerted efforts to improve the climate for small businesses. The county also has one of the finest park systems in the state.” Lillian Burry has been a huge contributor to the reforms which warranted those accolades from a critical source. FREEHOLD, NJ –Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is launching a year-long recognition program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.
“Since my office oversees a large part of the elections process for Monmouth County, I am proud to launch a county-wide program to celebrate the brave suffragists and all those who contributed to women gaining the right to vote 100 years ago,” said Clerk Hanlon.
Throughout the year, the County Clerk’s Office is working to engage and educate people of all ages through a variety of events, programs, and media. To start off the centennial year, Clerk Hanlon distributed sample resolutions commemorating the centennial to the governing bodies of Monmouth County’s 53 municipalities and to the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Bob Walsh, a former mayor and councilman of Howell Township, passed away this morning after a valiant battle with brain cancer. He was 61 years old.
Walsh was a passionate public servant, a loyal friend and a fierce adversary. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends. His impact on Howell and Monmouth County will be felt for years to come.
Atlantic Highlands activist Joshua Leinsdorf says that Route 36 in Atlantic Highlands, Highlands and Middletown has a higher per capita pedestrian death rate tham Newark and he wants our elected officials to come together to solve the problem rather than blaming other agencies has they have for years.

The Middletown Township Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to acquire a blighted commercial property on Leonardville Road in Belford and to build 10-20 affordable housing units for veterans in partnership with the Middletown Housing Authority.
The property at 37-45 Leonardville Road, across the street from the Carvel Ice Cream store, was previously the home of Middletown Tool Rental and a gas station before that. It has been vacant and overgrown for roughly 20 years. The Township acquired a certification from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection that the property is not contaminated prior to approving the acquisition.
FEMA is holding webinars on January 22, 30 and February 4 to inform faith-based, community and non-profit organizations information regarding grants available for security enhancement, Congressman Chris Smith announced.
“I encourage groups to participate in one of the webinars to learn about a FEMA grant program to improve security,” Smith said. “Faith communities and other non-profits have been targets of hate and violence, and this grant is available to address issues of prevention of and preparation for potential threats.
I hope everyone is staying warm, happy and healthy this winter season. It sure has been a cold one the last few days but there is only a little more than 100 days until the unofficial start to the summer season!
In the meantime, I would like to provide an update of different projects and initiatives taking place throughout Monmouth County.
As of yesterday, Monday January 20th, the Ocean Avenue Shark River Bridge (W-43) has been closed for emergency repairs. During a routine inspection of the Bridge, deterioration of the steel pinions, which support the bridge when it opens and closes, was found. The contract for the project was awarded to Cornell & Company, Inc. of Woodbury, NJ in the amount of $494,000.
Jim Keady ended his candidacy for the Democrat nomination to lose to Congressman Chris Smith this afternoon.
The former Asbury Park councilman who earned 43% of the vote as an off the line challenger in the 2016 CD-4 Democrat primary released the following statement to his supporters via email:
Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone was in the U.S. Capitol today getting a tour from Congressman Chris Smith when the House Impeachment Managers came marching by on their way to the Senate.
