MIDDLETOWN —The family suing to prevent the closure of Mater Dei Prep in Middletown is withdrawing its lawsuit. Brian Petrone said he decided to drop the suit, after speaking with school officials and alumni, out of concern that his action would harm his goal of having the Catholic high school become more financially secure. There is still Hope for Mater Dei Prep
Mater Dei Prep, the Catholic High School in Middletown affiliated with St. Mary Parish has received a two month life line.
On Tuesday, Father Jeff Kegley announced the school would close its doors and stop educating young Catholics in June because after years of financial losses the parish could no longer sustain the school which is on track to lose $1 million this year.
Yesterday, encouraged by “the tremendous outpouring of support from the school and parish community to keep Mater Dei Prep open”, Fr. Kegley announced a two month fund raising campaign, “Save the Seraphs,” to raise the $1 million necessary to keep the school operating another year.

Marter Dei Prep, the Catholic High School affiliated with St.Mary Parish in Middletown will close due to financial losses at the conclusion of the current school year, according to a press release issued today by Father Jeff Kegley, Pastor of the parish.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you that Mater Dei Prep will close at the end of this school year, June 2015. Over the many years, Mater Dei Prep has been running large financial deficits. It had been the hope of the Parish Finance Council and myself that these trends could be reversed. However, the 2014-2015 projected loss is close to one million dollars,” Kegley said.

Voters in the Freehold Borough, Ocean Township and West Long Branch School Districts went to the polls yesterday to decide the fate of school construction bonding proposals.
In Freehold, 611 voters, 11% of those registered rejected borrowing $33 million for school construction by 241 to 370. An identical referendum was defeated by Borough voters on September 30 by 273 to 374. There are 1644 students residing in the district. The average property tax bill in Freehold Borough would have increased by $278 per year had the measure passed.

Whether the Borough’s residents voted for or against the Board’s referendum, no one can deny that the overcrowding has been and remains an issue which requires an acceptable solution. The conflict arises as to whether the solution should cost the Freehold Borough taxpayers close to $33 million.
A recent newspaper article read that 36 Borough pupils have been honored for earning a perfect score of 300 on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge testing. Despite the lack of proper classroom space, the teachers and students have managed to overcome and excel, which should be commended. The dedication of the staff and the willingness of the students to learn is, in fact, the true essence of an education. No matter where the lesson is held, whether in a classroom, a gymnasium, in the corridor or under a tree in the courtyard, the core of education is in the connection made between the teacher and his pupil, not the venue.

School nurses and other trained personnel would be authorized to administer epinephrine to any student having an anaphylactic reaction under legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande (R-11).
Casagrande’s bill, A-304 was passed in the Assembly, 73-0, on May 22 and was approved by the Senate Education Committee unanimously this morning. If approved by the full Senate, the bill will go to Governor Chris Christie whose signature will make it law.
“As many as two children in every classroom have at least one food allergy,” said Casagrande, R – Monmouth. “Schools should be able to respond quickly and appropriately to help children with a serious allergic reaction.”
Recent studies suggest that one in 13 children are affected by food allergies. More than 15 percent of school aged children with food allergies have had a reaction at school.
