Planned Parenthood Manager Fired Over Video. LiveAction Still Blew It

By Art Gallagher

Amy Woodruff, the office manager of the Perth Amboy Planned Parenthood office caught on tape cooperating with people she believed to be engaged in underage prostitution and sex trafficking, by pro-life activists from LiveAction.org, has been fired, according to a report in the Star Ledger.

LiveAction has been subject to criticism for releasing an edited abridged version of their undercover video. In response, they have released the entire video which can be viewed here.

Yet releasing the full video of the Perth Amboy undercover visit does not tell the whole story.  Nor does it absolve LiveAction of its well deserved criticism.  LiveAction and their leader, Lila Rose, set their cause back with this stunt.

LiveAction’s undercover “reporters” visited Planned Parenthood offices in five states and the District of Columbia as part of their sting, including the Shrewsbury office which was visited on January 13.  Planned Parenthood informed the FBI and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder of the suspected sex trafficking ring.  They issued a statement to the effect that they had sought an FBI probe .  The Associated Press ran a story on January 24 which quoted Rose implying that sex trafficking ring was indeed her undercover reporters:

Lila Rose, Live Action’s founder and president, described Planned Parenthood’s assertion as “very interesting.” She declined to confirm or deny that the clinic visits were part of a Live Action operation, but did indicate in a telephone interview that an undercover videotape project of some sort was in the works.

“The story that speaks loudest will be in the evidence,” she said. “I can’t comment until we release the visual evidence.”

The evidence is that Planned Parenthood did the right thing by reporting the suspected sex trafficking ring to the authorities.   Rose’s response should not have been “very interesting.”  It should have been to come clean and inform the FBI of her organization’s operation. Law enforcement resources could have (should have) been diverted from real threats to investigate Planned Parenthood’s report.  Lives could have been lost or real sex traffickers could have victimized additional children or adult female slaves due to Rose’s recklessness.

Planned Parenthood will win the PR war over this stunt.  That is very unfortunate, as Rose’s cause, to prevent taxpayer funding of abortions, is a good one.

Rose and LiveAction  have damaged their credibility and that of other pro-life organizations that blindly accepted and promoted the stunt.  Conservatives must resist the tempation to adopt left wing methods to advance our cause.  To do so makes us no better than the lefties who attempted to blame the Arizonia shootings on conservative hate speech.

Undercover investigations are appropriate.  But when your cover is blown and/or your target does the right thing, the battle has already been lost.  In this case, the battle was lost and the cause was damaged.

Update On LiveAction Video

Media Matters calls video a HOAX.  Says Planned Parenthood already alerted federal authorities of a suspected sex trafficing ring.

The “otherside” of the story, per Media Matters:

Today, anti-abortion rights propagandist Lila Rose released her latest in a series of heavily edited videos seeking to demonstrate that Planned Parenthood engages in criminal activities. Rose’s organization, Live Action, claims their video exposes what they call “Planned Parenthood’s cover-up of child sex trafficking.”

Except that isn’t what the video shows at all.

Rather, the Live Action video shows edited comments made by a single Planned Parenthood employee. Live Action has so far refused to publicly release the full video of the incident, instead posting what the organization itself admits is an “abridged 11-minute video.” (Live Action claims they are “sending full footage” to law enforcement officials.)

Is Live Action accurately portraying the Planned Parenthood employee’s statements and actions? It’s impossible to say for sure without the full video, but there is good reason for media to be skeptical. Lila Rose, after all, began infiltrating abortion clinics in collaboration with James O’Keefe — a convicted criminal who repeatedly lied about his heavily edited ACORN videos. Rose herself has a history of smearing the subjects of her videos.

But even if Live Action’s video doesn’t take the employee out of context, the incident obviously doesn’t show Planned Parenthood covering up child sex trafficking. That’s because Planned Parenthood has already reported the “potential sex trafficking” to law enforcement officials.

On January 24, Planned Parenthood released the following statement, titled “Planned Parenthood Informs Federal Authorities of Potential Sex Trafficking” [emphasis in original]:

Last week, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) alerted federal authorities to a potential multistate sex trafficking ring.  Over a five day period, visitors to Planned Parenthood health centers in six states said they were seeking information from Planned Parenthood about health services Planned Parenthood could provide to underage girls who were part of a sex trafficking ring.  Subsequent to alerting U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Planned Parenthood learned the identify of one of those involved and believes these visits are likely a hoax by opponents of legal abortion seeking to discredit Planned Parenthood, which delivers preventive health care and abortion services to three million women each year.

Men, sometimes accompanied by a woman, have visited at least 11 Planned Parenthood health centers in six states within a one-week time frame.  During their visits, they claimed to be involved in sex trafficking of teens, some of whom are in the United States illegally.  These men appeared at health centers without appointments and said that they were seeking health services for themselves, but they quickly turned the conversation to the sex ring they said they were managing.

“When Planned Parenthood learns of an operation that exploits young women, we vigilantly work with law enforcement authorities to uncover and stop this abhorrent activity,” said Stuart Schear, PPFA vice president for communications.  “Planned Parenthood’s top priority is the health and safety of our patients and the health and well-being of women and teens across the country, and we have been in contact with federal and local authorities to identify the persons involved in these visits.”

One of the men involved in these visits has now been identified, and he appears to be associated with or influenced by Live Action, an anti-Planned Parenthood organization that uses surreptitious videotaping and manipulative editing for media and political campaigns.  The pattern of these visits and the highly unusual nature of the information being shared with staff lends credibility to the possibility that these multistate visits are part of this organization’s ongoing effort to “bring down” Planned Parenthood, a nearly 100-year-old organization with more than 800 health centers from coast to coast.  Live Action is associated with James O’Keefe, the conservative activist who was arrested for attempting to wiretap the offices of Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

In recent years Planned Parenthood has been the target of activists attempting to portray the organization negatively by secretly videotaping inside health centers and publicizing heavily edited versions of those tapes to the media.  Recent incidents are the first time that such visitors have told Planned Parenthood staff that they are involved in sex trafficking of minor girls.

“If a multistate sex trafficking operation is in place, those responsible must be pursued to stop the exploitation of girls and young women,” said Schear.  “If these visits are part of a ‘dirty tricks’ campaign, they must be condemned.  Falsely claiming sex trafficking to health professionals to advance a political agenda is an astoundingly cynical form of political activity.”

All Planned Parenthood staff have been alerted to the suspicious visits, and Planned Parenthood is working with FBI investigators and local authorities.

Last week, the AP reported that “Planned Parenthood Federation of America president Cecile Richards wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder summarizing the visits and requesting an FBI investigation. If the man’s assertions were true, she wrote, they would indicate possible violations of federal laws dealing with interstate sex trafficking of minors. … Schear said there had been some preliminary contacts with the FBI, which was asking for information from the clinics that were visited.”

Planned Parenthood reported the potential sex trafficking to the Attorney General and the FBI. So clearly, Planned Parenthood wasn’t trying to cover anything up.

Perth Amboy Planned Parenthood Manager Taped Coaching Underage Sex Trafficking Pimp

Shocking video shows office manager coaching a man posing as a pimp on how to “beat the system” of protection for underage sex trafficking victims.

The undercover video was produced by LiveAction.Org, a youth led pro-life movement based in San Jose, California.

From LiveAction’s blog:

NEW JERSEY – February 1, 2011– A Planned Parenthood manager in New Jersey coaches a man and a woman posing as sex traffickers how to secure secret abortions, STD testing, and contraception for their female underage sex slaves, and make their whole operation “look as legit as possible” in an undercover video released this morning.

Clinic manager Amy Woodruff, LPN, of Planned Parenthood Central New Jersey’s Perth Amboy center, warns the pimp and his prostitute to have their trafficked underage girls lie about their age to avoid mandatory reporting laws, promising, “even if they lie, just say, ‘Oh he’s the same age as me, 15,’…it’s just that mainly 14 and under we have to, doesn’t matter if their partner’s the same age, younger, whatever, 14 and under we have to report.” She says, “For the most part, we want as little information as possible.”

Woodruff also recommends how the pimp can get his prostitutes cheaper contraception by claiming they are “students”: “If they’re minors, put down that they’re studentsMemphis. Yeah, just kind of play along that they’re students–we want to make it look as legit as possible.”

If one of the young trafficked girls needs an abortion, Woodruff refers the pimp and prostitute to the Metropolitan Medical Association, where “their protocols aren’t as strict as ours and they don’t get audited the same way that we do.” The prostitute in the video asks how long after the abortion until the girls can have sex again, and when Woodruff says “minimum of 2 weeks,” she asks what sex acts the girls could still do to make money. Woodruff advises, “Waist up, or just be that extra action walking by” to advertise sex to potential clients.

Sex trafficking is punishable under federal law and carries a potential life sentence. The new video is released by Live Action, a pro-life new media organization led by 22-year-old Lila Rose. The video airs just days after Planned Parenthood’s leadership suspected the sting operation and sought an FBI probe of Live Action in order to deter the release of the exposé. Live Action is sending full footage to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, NJ Attorney General Paula Dow, officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and other law enforcement officials, requesting federal and state investigations into Planned Parenthood’s sexual abuse and sex trafficking cover up.Memphis

The abridged 11-minute video is available at: LiveAction.org

“This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Planned Parenthood intentionally breaks state and federal laws and covers up the abuse of the young girls it claims to serve,” said Lila Rose, President of Live Action. “Time and time again, Planned Parenthood has sent young girls back into the arms of their abusers. They don’t deserve a dime of the hundreds of millions they receive in federal funding from taxpayers. Congress must cease funding and the Department of Justice should investigate this corrupt organization immediately.”

Live Action has previously released more than a dozen hidden camera videos from ten states and shows the alarming trend of illegal Planned Parenthood activity including cover-up of sexual abuse of minors, the skirting of parental consent laws, citing unscientific and fabricated medical information to convince women to have abortions, and Planned Parenthood’s willingness to accept donations earmarked to abort African-American babies.

Marie Tasy, Executive Director of New Jersey Right to Life, issue the following statement in response to the video:

“Over the last year, several NJ lawmakers endorsed by Planned Parenthood have continued to defy the Governor and push legislation to use taxpayer money to fund these clinics, “ said Marie Tasy, Executive Director for New Jersey Right to Life.  “ Using buzz words and phrases like ‘gender equity’ and  ‘poor women’s access to health care,’  these lawmakers have  invoked   ‘mothers, daughters, wives, sisters and friends who may one day find themselves without health care’  to try to obtain  support for their misguided attempts to fund Planned Parenthood.  After viewing this video, we ask, who in their right mind would trust their mother, wife, sister, friend and especially their minor daughter to Planned Parenthood?”

“New Jersey taxpayers and every state and federal elected official and law enforcement agency throughout this country should be outraged that an organization claiming to conduct ‘extensive community outreach’ has been caught on tape doing everything in its power to conceal the sexual abuse and exploitation of girls as young as 14.  When Planned Parenthood says they provide ‘family planning’ services and brags that ‘we welcome everyone – regardless of race, age, income, sexual orientation, or disability,’ what they really mean is that they’re willing to make money on anyone, even child sex slaves,” said Tasy.

“We urge Congress to Defund Planned Parenthood and call on the U.S. Attorney General, the U.S. District Attorney and the NJ Attorney General  to immediately launch a complete investigation into  Planned Parenthood clinics and Metropolitan Medical Association in Englewood, NJ’s  operations for aiding and abetting in the sexual abuse and  trafficking of minors.  We thank Governor Christie for vetoing legislation in July which would have restored $7.6 million in funds to Planned Parenthood and urge him to veto A3273/S2393 so that the state of NJ and its taxpayers will not be complicit in the exploitation of poor women and minors under the pretense of ‘women’s health.’   We also call on Assembly Speaker Oliver and Senate President Sweeney to fulfill their obligation  to protect minor girls in NJ  by scheduling hearings on ACR71/SCR99, the Parental Notification Constitutional Amendment without delay,” said Tasy.

Amy Woodruff, the Planned Parenthood manager in the video was not available for comment when MMM called.  The women who answered the phone at the Perth Amboy office said someone would call back.  MMM will update this story when and if they do.

Governor Christie Signs Landmark Legislation to Revitalize Atlantic City

Legislation marks key step in Christie Administration’s comprehensive plan to renew regional economy

Trenton, NJ – Today, Governor Chris Christie signed into law sweeping legislation to enact his reform plans to revitalize the ailing gaming and tourism industries in Atlantic City, and set the region on a new course for economic growth, job creation and prosperity.  Recognizing the significance and importance of Atlantic City’s regional economy to the state as a whole, Governor Christie put forward a comprehensive, bold reform plan in July aimed at turning around the deep and unprecedented challenges facing Atlantic City’s gaming and tourism industries.

The bills signed by Governor Christie today, S-11 and S-12, represent critical steps in following through on his commitment to the tens of thousands of New Jersey families whose livelihoods depend on the regional economy, and will set the stage for Atlantic City to once again be a world-class destination resort and an engine of job creation and economic growth.  S-11 authorizes the creation of a tourism district within Atlantic City, with the charge of improving public safety, public health, marketing and infrastructure projects and improvements; S-12 provides for the reform and modernization of New Jersey’s casino regulatory structure.

“The challenges faced today by the Atlantic City tourism and gaming industries have been a long time in the making, and significant steps are needed to stop the decline and set a new course of economic growth, job creation and return Atlantic City to the ranks of the best destinations in the world.  But, it can and must be done for the economic health of New Jersey as a whole,” said Governor Christie.  “Since we announced our plan for reform just over six months ago, we have already taken steps to secure that future – to stabilize the City’s finances and create jobs through new business investment.  Today, we are going much further to signal to businesses, to the public and to the people who call Atlantic City home that a new, brighter and more prosperous future is coming again.”

The signing took place at the site of the Revel casino resort, a 53-story, 6.3 million square foot, 3,800 room hotel and casino that, upon completion, will be the biggest such property in Atlantic City.  Governor Christie also announced the approval of $260 million in tax-increment financing by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority that will support much needed infrastructure improvements in the South Inlet neighborhood adjacent to the Revel development and pave the way for completion of the $2.5 billion project and thousands of new jobs.  The project estimates the creation of 5,500 permanent jobs, 2,600 construction jobs, 1,100 manufacturing jobs, 400 vendor/supplies jobs and 250 professional/consulting jobs.  Along with job creation associated with ancillary utility and infrastructure improvement projects, total job creation for the Revel project is estimated at more than 10,000 jobs.

The New Jersey Economic Development Authority also today approved a new policy requiring as a condition of any tax increment financing package of $50 million or more, including the Revel financing approved today, that the state receive success reimbursement payments from the project commensurate with the extent of state financial participation.

S-11 implements several critical elements of Governor Christie’s revitalization plan for Atlantic City.  The bill authorizes the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) to establish a tourism district within Atlantic City.  Within the territorial limits of the tourism district, CRDA will be authorized to establish land use regulations, implement a tourism district master plan, promote public health and safety initiatives, advance commercial development, undertake redevelopment projects and institute infrastructure improvements.  The bill also provides for the merger of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority into CRDA.  CRDA will also enter into a public-private partnership with a not-for-profit consisting of a majority of New Jersey casino licensees, through which they will commit funds totaling $30 million annually for the development and implementation of a marketing program aimed at promoting Atlantic City. In October, the Casino Association of New Jersey announced the formation of such a non-profit and the commitment of the casino industry to contribute at least $30 million annually to promote Atlantic City and support the tourism district.

S-11 directs the Attorney General and Superintendent of State Police, in consultation with the Mayor of Atlantic City and municipal law enforcement officials, to develop a public safety plan for Atlantic City to be implemented by a District Commander appointed by the Superintendent.  The plan will include the development of law enforcement best practices, the procurement and deployment of new technology and equipment, and the development and implementation of a coordinated law enforcement strategy to address public safety concerns both inside and outside of the tourism district.

S-12 reforms the state’s regulatory structure for casinos by modernizing, streamlining, and eliminating duplication in the regulatory statutes, many of which were authored more than 30 years ago.  Under the bill, the Casino Control Commission (CCC) is assigned the lead role in initial casino licensing matters as well as in adjudicating regulatory disputes.  The Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) is charged with focusing on the day-to-day regulation of all casino operations.  These changes move away from the duplicative and overlapping investigative, oversight, and regulatory functions previously held by the two-bodies and creates a more well-defined system of regulatory authority by the entities.

In addition, S-12 accounts for the significant technological advancements that have taken place since the inception of the regulatory statue by eliminating the current requirement that the Casino Control Commission be continuously present, through inspectors and agents, at all times during the operation of a casino.  The bill provides for registration as opposed to licensure of certain casino-related employees and removes certain periodic license renewal requirements.  The bill would, however, add a requirement for designated information to be provided periodically by licensees to the CCC and DGE in order to verify ongoing compliance with all legal requirements.

Finally, the bill makes various other changes to state law to remove impediments to efficient and productive casino operations and provide additional flexibility in their operation.

On July 21st, Governor Christie welcomed and endorsed the recommendations of the New Jersey Gaming, Sports and Entertainment Advisory Commission chaired by Jon F. Hanson.  The actions taken today fulfill many of the goals outlined in that report, and move forward Governor Christie’s commitment to ensuring the growth and success of Atlantic City’s economy, and the state’s gaming and tourism industries.

Egypt and Israel – Two New Jersey Stories

Originally published on Politickernj

I am following the street uprisings in Egypt with a most profound sense of apprehension. There is no doubt in my mind as to the ultimate dreadful outcome.

President Hosni Mubarak will be deposed within the next three months.  Although leading dissident and former United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei will be the new nominal leader of the Egyptian government, real power will be held by the Muslim Brotherhood.  One can expect that within days after the Muslim Brotherhood gains control, the Egyptian government will sever diplomatic relations with Israel and withdraw its recognition of the Jewish State’s right to exist.

Just as Iran serves as a base for Shiite Islamic terrorism, Egypt will serve as a base for Sunni Islamic terrorism.  Iran presently is the patron of the terrorist Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, and Egypt will henceforth be the patron for Hamas terrorist forces in Gaza.   While Mubarak blocked access to forces attempting to provide weapons to Hamas from the Sinai, one can expect that the Sinai will now become a superhighway through which Hamas will be supplied the most sophisticated terrorist military equipment.

Historically, there has been real antipathy between Sunni and Shiite nations, as exemplified by the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.  The hatred that Sunni and Shiite Muslim fundamentalists feel towards Israel, however, has resulted in recent collaboration between the terrorist Shiite state of Iran and the terrorist Sunni forces of Hamas.  One can expect that eventually, the historic animus between Sunni and Shiite Muslims will result in Egypt and Iran becoming bitter adversarial nations.

Sunni and Shiite Muslim fundamentalists both want to destroy Israel and expel the Jews from the Middle East, however.  Accordingly, when it comes to Israel, the new government in Egypt and the government in Iran will cooperate in efforts to utilize their respective terrorist subsidiaries, Hamas and Hezbollah to make life unbearable for the people of Israel.

Accordingly, within the next few years, Israel will be compelled to reoccupy Gaza to crush Hamas terrorism.  Eventually, this will bring Israel into conflict with Egypt.

My pessimistic analysis is not only based on my perspective as a strong Jewish supporter of Israel.

As an undergraduate at Northwestern University, I studied the Arab world in depth under the tutelage of the late Dr. Ibrahim Abu-LuGhod, a Palestinian Arab who was one of the two representatives of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) who met with former Secretary of State George Shultz after the United States opened diplomatic contacts with the PLO at the end of the Reagan administration, the other representative being the late Dr. Edward Said of Columbia University.

Under Dr. Abu-LuGhod’s direction, I completed an independent study course on the politics of the Arab world.  With his assistance, I wrote my political science honors thesis on the Palestinian Arab nationalist movement.

Sadly, my knowledge of the Middle East leads me to the inescapable conclusion that the peace between Israel and Egypt, which has existed since 1977 and for which a great man, former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat gave his life, will soon be at its end.  Many observers have termed it a “cold peace”.

Two New Jersey stories demonstrate, however, that this peace was much warmer than most people realize.  The first story involved former Governor Christie Whitman, in whose administration I proudly served, an excellent governor and a classy and great lady.  The second story involved a person I love most dearly and of whom I am most proud, my son Neil.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I served as Assistant Commissioner of the former Department of Commerce and Economic Development during the first term of the Whitman administration and as Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission during the second term.  I also had  another role in which I served unofficially as a liaison for Governor Whitman with the New Jersey Jewish community.

In this role, I reviewed and gave recommendations on invitations Governor Whitman received to appear before Jewish religious and secular organizations.  Her speechwriters also sent to me for my review speeches to be presented before Jewish audiences.  Finally, I was often a “point person” with whom Jewish leaders met to convey to the Governor their concerns about various issues affecting the Jewish community.

All this was a labor of love for me.  I can say without hyperbole that Governor Whitman had the best relationship with a statewide Jewish community of any governor in the nation during her tenure.  The strong support she received from the Jewish community was a key factor in her reelection in 1997.

Governor Whitman’s personal and governmental relationship with the State of Israel was unique among American governors of her era.  It began with her trip to Israel in 1992, prior to her becoming governor in 1994.  During her initial visit to Israel, Israeli leaders such as the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin actually sought her friendship.  Once elected as governor, Whitman became the national leader among American governors on economic development issues.  This was a key factor in the increasing trade and mutual investment between New Jersey and Israeli businesses during the 1990s.

I served as one of the coordinators of Governor Whitman’s 1996 trade mission to Israel in which over one hundred companies participated, together with various New Jersey governmental and political leaders and media.  This trip took place twenty-one months after the Whitman administration opened New Jersey’s first trade office in Israel in the city of Ra’anana.

Thus, it should not have surprised me how Governor Whitman was received by Israelis on that trip as a beloved American leader.  The Jerusalem Post ran a story about her as a future American President.  Everywhere she went, Israelis enthusiastically wanted to greet her.

The adulation of the Israeli public for Christie Whitman did not stop with that trade mission.  Two years later, in 1998, I was informed that the Orthodox Jewish outreach organization, Aish HaTorah had invited her to Jerusalem to receive their Friend of Zion Award.

I recommended with alacrity that Governor Whitman accept this award.  Aish HaTorah has an outstanding reputation in both Israel and the United States for not only its religious outreach but also its good communal works.  The organization has received the endorsement of both Jewish and Gentile prominent American politicians and show business people.

In the process of planning the trip, I received a phone call from the Governor’s office as to the possibility of her visiting Egypt after the Jerusalem Aish HaTorah event.  This had been suggested by one of Governor Whitman’s friends.

The trip to Egypt was easily arranged for Governor Whitman by her close Israeli friend, Ze’ev Bielski, the then Mayor of Ra’anana and today a member of the K’nesset, Israel’s parliament.  The fact that Governor Whitman was coming to Egypt from Israel, a nation with whom Egypt had fought four wars made no difference. Her trip to Egypt went smoothly, and the Egyptians with whom she met treated her most warmly.

Regardless of the state of relations then existing between the governments of Israel and Egypt, it was clear from the Whitman visit and the ease of arranging the trip between Bielski and his Egyptian counterparts that relations between the peoples of Israel and Egypt had improved considerably since the Sadat 1977 visit to Jerusalem.  How much relations had warmed between the two peoples became abundantly clear to me as a result of experiences of my son, Neil, in Israel during the academic year of 2000-2001.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Neil graduated from the University of Maryland in 2002 with a double degree in government and psychology.  He spent his junior year, 2000-2001 in the University Study-Abroad Program as a student in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Rothberg International School.

That academic year was a most difficult one for the Rothberg International School.  Another Palestinian Arab intifada began with the Temple Mount Palestinian Arab riots in September, 2000, which Neil saw from his dorm on Mount Scopus and described to me over the phone as they were happening.

As a result of the intifada, the Rothberg School incurred a withdrawal of 300 of its 400 students during that academic year of 2000-2001.  I am proud that Neil was one of the 100 students who remained enrolled in the Rothberg School throughout that entire academic year.

I must say that during that year, I felt more tension than Neil.  Every time I would read on the Internet about some terrorist attack in Jerusalem, I would call him.  He was fine – I was a nervous wreck.

One time during the spring of 2001, Neil had an academic break of ten days.  I called him from New Jersey and asked where he was going.  He responded, “To Dahab.”

I asked him, “Where’s Dahab?  I never heard of that place?”

He responded, “It’s a resort in the Sinai, in Egypt.”

I shouted into the phone loud enough for him to hear me in Jerusalem, “How can you go to Egypt in the middle of all these tensions between Israel and the Arab world?”

“Dad, I’ve been to Dahab before.  The people are very friendly to Israelis and Jewish tourists, trust me.”

My next call was to Michael Reiner, an Israeli close friend of Governor Whitman and the director of the New Jersey Trade Office in Ra’anana.  I asked him, “Michael, how safe is it for my son to be travelling to Dahab?”

Michael answered without hesitation, “Your son is safer in Dahab than he would be if he stayed in Jerusalem.”

Michael was right.  Neil went to Dahab for a week, and the Egyptians treated him with the utmost of friendliness and hospitality.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sadly, the era of good feeling between Israelis and Egyptians, as exemplified by the experiences of former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman and former New Jerseyan (now a New Yorker) Neil Steinberg, is now over, due to the fanaticism of the Islamic fundamentalists who will soon control Egypt.

I hold no brief for Hosni Mubarak.  His failure to democratize his regime and improve living conditions for the Egyptian people created conditions in which the Muslim Brotherhood could seize power.  In the words of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable.

That the members of the Muslim Brotherhood are fundamentalist extremist supporters of terrorism, however, is beyond dispute.  Even the late former Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser, a dedicated Pan-Arabist who opposed Israel and Zionism vigorously, wanted nothing to do with the Muslim Brotherhood and banned the movement in 1954.

It is true that the Muslim Brotherhood is not the only group participating in the current uprisings in Egypt.  There are many good rank and file citizens of Egypt who are participating in these protests due to their disgust with the autocratic Mubarak regime and the miserable living conditions and poverty for most Egyptians.

It is also true that the Muslim Brotherhood has muted its religious message recently in the interest of political pragmatism.  Yet there is no doubt of the Muslim Brotherhood’s ultimate goals in the domestic and international sphere: 1) the transformation of Egypt into a nation governed strictly by a fundamentalist implementation of Sharia, the sacred  Islamic law; and 2) the destruction of the State of Israel.

Finally, as I stated above, I have no doubt that due to their organizational and political effectiveness, the Muslim Brotherhood will soon attain control of the Egyptian government, reducing Mohamed ElBaradei to figurehead status.

Shiite Muslim fundamentalists control Iran, and Sunni Muslim fundamentalists will soon control Egypt.  My fear is that the extreme fundamentalist branch of the Sunni Wahhabi movement may soon transform the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia into the Islamic Republic of Saudi Arabia.

We are moving into a brave new world in the Middle East – a most frightening one.  I have lived through three wars between Israel and Egypt (1956, 1967, and 1973) and a peace which lasted 34 years.  I am most fearful as to what the future holds between Israelis and Egyptians.

Alan J. Steinberg served as Regional Administrator of Region 2 EPA during the administration of former President George W. Bush. Region 2 EPA consists of the states of New York and New Jersey, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and eight federally recognized Indian nations. Under former New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman, he served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. He currently serves on the political science faculty of Monmouth University.

Bayshore Tea Party Updates

By Art Gallagher

The Bayshore Tea Party Group has launched it new and improved website.

Russ Cote did a really nice job designing the site which includes a welcome from founder Barbara Gonzalez, a mission statement, a description of their committees and feeds from twitter, facebook and foxnews.   Check it out.

Dwight Kehoe has left his leadership role with the BTPG, leaving Gonzalez and Bob Gordon as the group’s co-chairs.  In an email to group members, Kehoe sang the praises of what the group has accomplished since July of 2009 and said that he will “always support that wonderful organization.”

Unrelated to Kehoe’s departure, there have been persistent rumors within the GOP establishment that the Bayshore Tea Party is planning on supporting primary challengers against incumbent GOP state legislators in June.

Both Gonzalez and Gordon have told MMM on multiple occassions that they have no such plans.  They say their focus this year is on redistricting on the state and federal levels, and to increase the number of GOP legistors elected statewide. They are looking at working in swing districts outside of Monmouth that they hope to bring into the GOP side of the aisle.  Gordon mentioned that they would also consider supporting  Democratic primary challengers.

Federal Judge: ObamaCare Unconstitutional

U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson ruled, without trial, that the ObamaCare bill passed last year is unconstitutional.

The health care overhaul has been stricken down in one other court, and upheld in two others.  The matter will likely head now to the U. S. Supreme Court.

The text of Judge Vinson’s 78 page ruling can be found here.

Thursday night the Monmouth County Freeholders held their second regular meeting of January.  The topic that received a lot of attention towards the end of the meeting was the release of the Park Housing Report.

This report was released to the public Thursday night at the Freeholder meeting with information regarding the living situation of the Park Rangers and cost to the county.  The rangers who are county employees in fact do pay rent for the house that they live in, but at a discounted rate of 37% based on the market value which results in $181,102.00 in discounts for homes on county park property. Currently there are 27 units occupied by employees and 5 that were recently occupied and now are scheduled for demolition.

It is important to note that the rangers that live in these homes are on call 24/7 and do not receive any over time pay.  There was talk about looking into out sourcing 24 hour security to a private security firm and the report shows that the estimated cost would be $1,051,200.00 a year for the same services they currently receive with the live-in park rangers. With the current system in place, it is saving the tax payers of Monmouth County $870,098.00 annually.

The report states the following:

The results of the report confirms what the Board had believed to be true- that

the program is beneficial and cost effective in meeting its’ intended purpose while

            producing savings by-

                        -protecting park system property and assets;

                        -providing on-site assistance to the public;

-maintaining an on-site management presence; and

  • – assisting in the recruitment of professional staff

It is important to note that the Park Housing Program is directly related and essential to

the performance of the employees official duties with regard to the maintenance of

security of park visitors and County park property that includes the enforcement of Park

rules and regulations the rendering of assistance for the benefit of the health, safety, and

welfare of members for the public; and

It is also important to remember that the Housing Program-

  • – operates with revenues exceeding expenses; and
  • – is managed efficiently and effectively by continually monitoring costs, reducing the number units, and their distribution

The Committee has recommended that staff continue to review and monitor the housing program annually.

The report goes on in detail on how much each individual pays and how much the county receives in revenue. The revenues are exceeding the expenses!

The only complaint came from a familiar face at the Freeholder meetings, James Martin of Spring Lake Heights.  Martin is no stranger to the microphone at any Freeholder meeting, but his attitude is uncalled for. I am all for questioning your public officials on how money is being spent, but Mr. Martin should not choose style over substance in his criticism of the Freeholders.  He got up at the podium, in my belief, to just hear himself speak. The substance he was trying to criticize the Freeholders for was flawless. He just liked to hear himself complain. If I had to give him any advice it would be, you catch more bees with honey then you do with vinegar Mr. Martin. To recap, the county is giving out a little bit over $180,000 worth of discounts to those who give the parks 24/7 security and surveillance. He was complaining that the estimated little bit over $1,000,000 outsourcing contract that was under consideration was too much and could get it for less. Really Mr. Martin? Less then $180,000? What world does Mr. Martin live in that everything is for free? If he is willing to protect all the parks in the county the way they are protected now for less then $180,000 yearly, then I am sure the Freeholder Board will gladly take it under consideration, but until he does, or comes in with real, factual alternatives, he should keep his sarcastic and demeaning tone towards the Freeholders to himself.

The park rangers have a responsibility to protect a total of 450 million dollars worth of assets, 15,000 acres, and on average 5 million visitors yearly. The Housing Committee, their staff, and the Board of Chosen Freeholders should be commended for looking out for the tax payers of Monmouth County and at the same making sure our parks are the safest and best places to visit in New Jersey.
