Christie’s Bridgegate Defense Lawyer Named Interim U.S. Attorney

Interim U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed Craig Carpenito Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey today, according to an announcement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“Craig Carpenito has experience in private practice, with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and as an Assistant United States Attorney,” Attorney General Sessions said. “He has successfully prosecuted white collar criminals and fraudsters, and as Interim United States Attorney for New Jersey, he will continue to put criminals out of business—and behind bars.”

Carpenito, of Monroe Township, is a graduate of Rider University and Seton Hall Law.  He is a partner in the Alston and Bird law firm, served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney under Chris Christie from 2003 -2008 and was Senior Counsel at the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2000-2005.

Carpenito was Christie’s defense attorney in the Bridgegate matter, according to published reports. He counseled Christie staffer, now White House Advisor, Matt Mowers during his testimony during the NJ Legislature’s Bridgegate investigation.

“I commend Attorney General Sessions for his selection of Craig Carpenito to be New Jersey’s next United States Attorney,” said Governor Christie.  “Craig is an outstanding lawyer and the type of decisive leader the office really needs. I am confident he will be a U.S. Attorney that everyone in New Jersey will be proud of in the years ahead.”

Acting United States Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick is resuming his role as First Assistant United States Attorney.
