Middletown’s Deputy Mayor named Borough Administrator of West Long Branch
Stephanie Murray, the Deputy Mayor of Middletown Township, was named the Borough Administrator of West Long Branch, a part time position, at the August 9 council meeting of the borough. Murray started the job on August 23.
“I’m thrilled to be able to start my new career in such a wonderful community,” Murray said. “The experience and knowledge I’ve acquired over the last six years as a member of the Middletown Township committee will contribute to the people of West Long Branch and my experience there will contribute to the people of Middletown.”
Murray is a graduate of the Rutgers University School of Public Affairs and Administration’s Certified Public Management Program, a curriculum she completed at her own expense last month. She said that she applied for the West Long Branch job after seeing it posted on the NJ League of Municipalities website in July.
“Public service is a passion for me,” Murray said. “It’s a calling. I’m proud of the fact that I was appointed based on my hard work and qualifications.”
West Long Branch Mayor Janet Tucci said in a statement, “Since joining our West Long Branch family 3 weeks ago, Stephanie Murray has already proven herself to be a capable, energetic individual. She appears to be quite knowledgeable about governmental procedures and operations. Stephanie has also demonstrated the ability to be able to work well with the public and our Boro employees. We look forward to her future with us.”
MMM asked Tucci if Murray had called in any political favors to get the job.
“Absolutely not,” Tucci said. “I didn’t even know she was a Republican when I nominated her. Stephanie had the strongest application and performed best in the interviews. That’s why we hired her.”
According to the minutes of the West Long Branch council meeting when she was appointed, Murray’s salary is $48,000 per year. She told MMM that the part time position requires 19 hours per week, that she is not enrolled in the pension system and that the position does not provide health benefits.
“It is my objective to begin a new career at this time after spending multiple years raising my three children, now ages 11, 13, and 16 as well as running a small business,” Murray said on the resume she submitted with her application for the job.
Murray is a graduate of Fordham Univeristy with a B.A. in Social Science. She started her career as an assistant trader on Wall Street. In 2006 Murray founded a publishing company that she operated for nine years. She has been a volunteer for numerous Middletown based organizations and boards since 2009.
Congrats to Ms. Murray and West Long Branch. It is smart for towns to hire these experienced and public administration educated Republicans in important positions. Imagine what Ms. Murray has learned from representing the best run big-town in NJ.
By the way my Grandma was a Murray from Falls Road, Belfast.
