Manalapan School Threat Was False Alarm
Students wreck havoc tweeting
Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen posted the following message on facebook at 2:25 ths afternoon:
From the Manalapan Police and the Town Committee
At 11:11 am today March 13, 2013 the Manalapan Township Police were dispatched to the Manalapan High School in reference to a terroristic threat made via Twitter. A male juvenile student of the school sent a Twitter message which contained threats made by him that he intended to bring a firearm to the school and “go hunting”.
The school officials were made aware of the Tweets and immediately put the school into a stationary lockdown and contacted the police. The school officials were able to identify the student who sent the tweets and isolated him without incident. The juvenile was detained and checked by school security and found not to be in possession of any weapons. His belongings and locker were also checked and found not to have any weapons contained therein. This student was arrested on scene and juvenile charges will be signed against him for terroristic threats and false public alarm.
During the lockdown event, another student utilized the Twitter service and made reference to hiding in the ceiling of the school. This was then re tweeted by second student. The student who was indicating he was in the ceiling was found to be in his designated classroom and not in any ceiling. Both of these students were also isolated and brought to the administrator’s office area of the school. No criminal charges have been filed against these two juveniles pending further investigation.
The school remained in stationary lockdown for approximately one hour until the police and school officials deemed the school was clear of any additional threats and it was safe for the students to continue their day.
When I was notified I went to the school and stayed until the school made the announcement that they were resuming classes.
I am a student at Manalapan High School, and the only reason he said he was going to “go hunting” was because it is spirit week and it was animal print day. The individual who tweeted this is a good student a knows right from wrong. he meant this as a joke and never thought it would be taken this seriously.
As clear a case as we are likely to see that cellphones, smartphones and the like are more harmful and destructive in school buildings than constructive and helpful.
