Menendez Leading Kyrillos in Rutgers-Eagleton Poll

A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released this morning indicates that State Senator Joe Kyrillos is “virtually unknown” to the statewide electorate.

80% either have no opinion (50%) or are unsure (30%) of Kyrillos. 11% have a favorable opinion, 9% have an unfavorable opinion.

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez leads Kyrillos in a head to head match up by 44% to 22% with 26% unsure and 7% saying they won’t vote.

In a generic Democrat vs Republican match up, the Democrat wins 46% to 34%.

The poll’s sampling was slightly skewed in favor of Democrats.  Of the 914 registered voters Rutgers-Eagleton surveyed, 37% were Democrats, 20% were Republican and 43% were Independent.  The actual partisan break down of New Jersey’s registered voters is 34% Democrat, 22% Republican and 45% Independent, according to a February 18 report by Labels and Lists.   The survey was taken February 9-11.

Kyrillos views the poll in a positive light for his campaign.  His campaign manager, Chapin Fay, issued the following statement:

“With gas prices 50% higher than when Bob Menendez was elected to the Senate and unemployment skyrocketing from 4.7% to 8.3%, it’s no surprise Bob Menendez continues to struggle in the polls. His favorable/unfavorable rating is an anemic 37-24 and he is 44% on the ballot, which is Jon Corzine territory. When voters learn how Joe Kyrillos helped Governor Christie turn New Jersey around, they will support his effort to do the same in Washington.”

The Eagleton Poll is run by David Redlawsk, a former Democrat party operative in Iowa. Anything that Redlawsk (salary $147K) does is suspect. Where does he poll-Highland Park, Princeton, and Montclair? What does he ask-If the US attorney drops the charges against NJ State Senator Joe Kyrillos, would you vote for him for US Senate? Eagleton trashed Cliff Zukin, who was known for his impartiality, in favor of Redlawsk. However Zukin is still on the Rutgers payroll at $147K. If Redlawsk replaced Zukin, shouldn’t Zukin have been cut loose? This appears to be another example of Rutgers featherbedding in the social science area. Electrical Engineering could never get away with it, but liberal, far left Political Science can.

Slightly Skewed? I’ll say, 37% to 20% my arse.

THAT said, I still say Joe has a difficult time in NJ with Obama on the top of the ticket

Joe has a monumental task ahead of him.. there’s much work to do, and it will be very tough in November, with this ridiculous, clueless, blue state going for Nobama, no matter how much he steals from us.. wishing Joe best of luck, he needs it..

It would be nice if an Average Joe with some free time would step up to run in CD6 so that those of us who do some work can start hitting the ground for a local Congressional candidate and help a US Senate candidate at the same time.

It’s a big job to get rid of incumbents like Pallone and Menendez, especially in a presidential year, and with only a few short months until the general election, time is critical. I’m ready to get moving, just need a candidate or two to rally around.

So the poll shows Bob Menendez leading Joe Kyrillos by 44% – 22%, and right away I get two emails from Kyrillos:

    “Bad News for Bob”
    “Another Weak Poll for Menendez”

I think I’m going to the campaign HQ, sounds like a fun party there, I want to have some of the drinks they’re having.

No matter what Mr. Kryillos does its going to be a very tough race. I would think the best best for an R candidate would be positioned as a moderate/independent. Pointing out honost differences with the D’s and the President is fair but engaging in the crazy extremist and personal attacks of the far right is the road to a landslide loss. Even though the Gov is personally popular, I would not get myslef to tied to the hip with him either since there are still a lot of people in NJ that do not like him….no reason to give people a reason not to vote for you.

Good place to start showing he would be with the moderate R’s and not the extremists would be by speaking out against the Blunt Amendment
