Middletown Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger, PhD, announced that the Township’s facilities are closed and programs are cancelled on Thursday, February 9th, due to the Winter Storm Warning with expected blizzard like conditions in the Township.
The closure includes the Middletown Library, the Middletown Arts Center, the Senior Center, Poricy Park and the Health Department. The Project Plus program, scheduled for Thursday night, is cancelled.

Occupants of a black SUV opened fire on two male pedestrians in Neptune last night, according to a statement by Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the right side his chest and was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center with a non-life-threatening threatening injury.
Neptune Township Police responded to a shots fired report at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Saturday, February 4 in the area of Myrtle Avenue and Stratford Avenue. Asbury Park police officers located a male gunshot victim in close proximity to the shooting in close proximity to the shooting moments later.

Sarah Stern, the Neptune City woman missing since December 2, was strangled and her body thrown over the Rt 35 bridge connecting Neptune City and Belmar, according to charges filed by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office today.
Liam McAtasney and Preston Taylor, both 19 and of Neptune City, were charged in Stern’s death today.
McAtasney was charged with first degree Felony Murder, first degree Robbery, second degree Desecration of Human Remains, second degree Conspiracy (to Desecrate Human Remains) and second degree Hindering Apprehension. Taylor was charged with second degree Desecration of Human Remains, second degree Conspiracy (to Desecrate Human Remains) and second degree Hindering Apprehension.

Christopher M. Young of Freehold Borough was arrested by detectives of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office yesterday and charged with making a false public alarm of a critical infrastructure. Young texted a bomb threat to the agency’s 9-1-1 Telecommunications Center in Freehold on December 8, 2016 from a pre-paid cell phone.
A former employee of the 9-1-1 center who was fired in October of 2016 during his probationary employment, Young’s text claimed there was a bomb in the center.
“These types of threats are taken very seriously and will not be tolerated to ensure the safety of the people who live and work in Monmouth County,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden. “I commend our detectives from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office for fully responding to this false public alarm and actively working to find out who was responsible for this disruptive and potentially dangerous threat.”
Monmouth County Democrats have elected David Brown of Long Branch to complete the term of former Chairman Vin Gopal who resigned earlier this month in order to run for State Senate in the 11th legislative district.
Brown, a member of the Monmouth County Tax Board, is employed by the Borough of Roselle (Union County) where he is the Borough Administrator/Acting DPW Supervisor and the Treasurer of the Public Schools, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He is Vice Chairman of the The Greater Long Branch Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Guild, 1st Vice President of the Greater Long Branch NAACP and Vice Chairman of the Second Baptist Church.
Lorna Phillipson of Spring Lake Heights, Congressman Chris Smith’s Democrat opponent in 2016, also sought the position.
Scammers are once again targeting Monmouth County small businesses by posing as representatives of JCP&L and threatening to shut off their power unless immediate payment is made via a pre-paid debit card, Green Dot card, MoneyPak card or gift card, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
Recent targets have included a salon, gym and and deli. The scam follows a line of fear and intimidation: you are advised you are past due on a bill, you are threatened with having your power shut-off, and you are given the opportunity to “pay” your bill within a brief period of time to avoid any embarrassment or work stoppages.
