Atlantic Highlands-Democrat Candidates for Borough Council, Edward Cetron and Elliot Warren have withdrawn their names from the general election ballot and the local Democrat Party has endorsed incumbent Republican Councilmen Lou Fligor and Jake Hoffmann for reelection. Fligor and Hoffmann are running for as Independents after being denied the Republican endorsement by GOP Municipal Chair Jane Frotton.

Seastreak, the company that provides ferry service from to New York and Jersey City from Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, announced a $24 million upgrade to its fleet of luxury vessels to commence with the construction of a new 600 passenger catamaran that will be delivered in late 2017.
The new vessel, which is being built by Incat-Crowther of Sydney, Australia, will include 520 interior seats with an additional 206 exterior seats located on the second and third deck. The pilot’s house will be on the third deck, improving the views of passengers on the second deck. There will be seven restrooms located inside the vessel along with ADA compliant accommodations.

Monmouth County’s Mosquito Control Department has discovered evidence of the West Nile Virus in Atlantic Highlands and the Hillside section of Middletown.
Residential streets in Atlantic Highlands east of First Avenue to Sears Avenue and north to E. Washington Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, and from Portland Avenue to Grand Avenue north of Hillside Avenue in the Hillside section of Middletown will be ground sprayed on Tuesday morning July 26 from 4 a.m. till 6 a.m., weather permitting, according to an announcement by Deputy Freeholder Director Serena DiMaso.

A countywide collaboration with Monmouth County’s government, FEMA, Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute, New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, National Park Service, Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve at Rutgers University, Navy Weapons Station Earle, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Verizon designed to raise the public’s awareness of flood risks and to encourage the mitigation of those risks was launched this morning in Middletown with the installation of a High Water Mark (HWM) sign at the Belford Ferry Terminal.
FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program’s High Water Mark awareness program gives participating municipalities Community Rating System (CRS) points which result in residents of the community getting a break on their flood insurance premiums.
Municipal participation is voluntary and there is no cost to the towns for participating.

Toni Ann Marletta in Judge Ronald Reisner’s Court Room, June 20, 2016
Toni Ann Marletta, the 50 year old Leonardo woman accused of killing Marissa Procopio, 15, of Atlantic Highlands, in a hit and run incident on Rt 36 last July, pleaded not guilty to Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident which resulted in a death, a Second Degree Crime, two counts of Third Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child and one count of second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child this morning during her arraignment in Judge Ronald Reisner’s Courtroom in Freehold.
Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Meghan Doyle told Judge Reisner that the State has offered Marletta a plea deal which carries a 7 year sentence in state prison. Marletta has until September 6, the date of the next case conference, to accept that deal.
Peter M. O’Hara, Esq, Marletta’s defense attorney, said that he would be filing a motion to suppress some the the evidence against his client.

Jeffrey Olander, 51 of Highlands, fled from two traffic stops on Thrusday afternoon, eluded the Atlantic Highlands, Highlands and Middletown Police Departments for 12 hours and threatened to shoot Highlands Police Officers before he was tasered and arrested in the hallway outside his apartment on the fourteenth floor of the East Pointe Condominiums shortly before 4 a.m. Friday morning, according to a statement by Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramicconi.
Members of the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team (MOCERT) and the Highlands Police Department made the arrest.
This was the first time a Monmouth County law enforcement officer has deployed a Conductive Energy Device (commonly called taser) to subdue a suspect since the tool was first authorized for use in New Jersey.

Two Atlantic Highlands residents were surprised on Thursday when the the guys they ordered marijuana from pulled a gun and pepper spray, robbed them of $265 and fled the scene.
The victims, who were not named in Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni’s press release, called the Atlantic Highlands Police Department. The Sea Bright Police Department spotted the robber’s vehicle on Ocean Avenue a short while later and followed the perps into Rumson. The Atlantic Highlands PD arrested the men in Rumson.
