The Arnone Report: Back to School, Road Improvements and a great man honored in Belmar

By Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone

Freeholder Director Tom Arnone

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend! A new school year is officially upon us and that means it is time to be extra cautious when driving around our communities!

It’s always important – and especially now that children are back in school – that everyone obeys speed limits, stops for pedestrians and avoids distractions when driving. It’s also important that pedestrians and children walking to school use crosswalks or cross at intersections and wait for the walk signal before stepping into the road.

As the school year begins, I will be sending notices to school districts once again to let them know I am always happy to meet with students of all ages to discuss civics and the role of county government. Last year I had the opportunity to meet with students in several towns throughout the county including Red Bank, Belmar, Eatontown, Long Branch, Tinton Falls and Asbury Park. Sheriff Golden warns swimmers of the dangers of riptides

Labor Day weekend is projected to be beautiful. However, Jersey Shore beaches have been experiencing dangerous riptides recently.  This trend is expected to continue through the weekend.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden recorded this video earlier this summer with Chief Lifeguard Tim  Harmon of Sea Girt to warn of the dangers of riptides and how to avoid a tragedy in the ocean.

Working Together, We Can End Hunger in Our Community

By Kim Guadagno

Kim Guadagno

Tonight in New Jersey, children will go to bed hungry. Contrary to popular notions about hunger in America, most are not homeless. In fact, most New Jersey families that struggle to put food on the table live in households that have at least one working adult.

In Monmouth County, where I live, and in neighboring Ocean County, one in ten residents don’t know where their next meal will come from, let alone whether if it will be nutritious. One in seven of those ten are children. The anxiety and fear of not knowing is what social services agencies call “food insecurity.”

That is why I am beginning a new chapter in my life this week: leading the effort to end hunger in our community as Chief Executive Officer of Fulfill, formerly the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Fulfill aims to not only help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity today, but to provide them with the resources to become self-sufficient for tomorrow. I am excited join a team of 50 employees and 1,400 volunteers whose mission is to “shorten the line” of those in our communities who are hungry.

Smith will run in 2020

Congressman Chris Smith and Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger at the 2016 9/11 remembrance in Middletown

Congressman Chris Smith is running for 21st term in the House of Representatives next year and would be content to run another 4-5 times, according to a interview he had with NJGlobe.

“I’ve never been more enthusiastic about a job in my life,” Smith said.  “I hope to have another decade here.  I love it that much.”

Smith was responding to rumors that he would retire in 2020. In 2018, MoveOn.Org had a fundraising campaign based upon their lie that the Dean of the New Jersey delegation was retiring.

“It’s a type of smear,” Smith told NJGlobe of the retirement rumors.  “It’s factually untrue.  It’s unethical.”

Gray served as Clerk of the Board for eight years until 2010.  He was previously Director of Administration for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities from 1995 to 2002, according to NewJerseyGlobe.

Jim was a Manalapan Township Committeeman from 1984 to 1998. He served five terms as Mayor and four terms as Deputy Mayor. Senator O’Scanlon discusses the storm and JCP&L’s response

By Senator Declan O’Scanlon

Senator Declan O’Scanlon

For those who didn’t lose power, or see the fury of Monday night’s storm, be thankful. Your lives went on like a normal summer day with a thunderstorm in the background.  For those who were in the micro-bursts…it was the scariest thing many have seen since Sandy..and more than many of us have ever seen. It lasted 20 minutes through the area…but left more immediate wind devastation than Sandy. Sandy spent hours piling water into our Bayshore and bays and oceanfront. This unnamed…moment…tore down trees and utility poles and the wires near, or attached to, them. And it was block-by-block, neighborhood by neighborhood.  Which made it even harder on those without power. Many neighbors had no inconvenience at all.  I can say now, it was a miracle no one was seriously injured or killed.  For those that didn’t see it, trust me, this isn’t hyperbole.

In the end over 200,000 people had no power. Trees were down. JCP&L on the scramble, tested again.  By Thursday night, all but just over 200 customers in Monmouth County had their power restored.
