Senator Declan O’Scanlon said that $54 million of new subsidies announced by Governor Phil Murphy to cover the rising cost of childcare due to an increased minimum wage highlights the pain caused by government mandated wage policies to both families and taxpayers.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – raising the minimum wage sounds lovely in theory but stings in reality,” O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) said. “While this $54 million childcare subsidy may seem great for a few qualifying families that are struggling to afford childcare, there are many other low- and middle-income families that won’t get a penny of help as their cost of living rises as a direct result of Governor Murphy’s minimum wage increases. The simple fact is that most New Jersey families will be stuck shelling out more of their hard-earned money for a variety of services, including childcare, which have become less affordable as costs have been driven higher by expensive government mandates.”

Freeholder Director Tom Arnone
I hope everyone had a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend! A new school year is officially upon us and that means it is time to be extra cautious when driving around our communities!
It’s always important – and especially now that children are back in school – that everyone obeys speed limits, stops for pedestrians and avoids distractions when driving. It’s also important that pedestrians and children walking to school use crosswalks or cross at intersections and wait for the walk signal before stepping into the road.
As the school year begins, I will be sending notices to school districts once again to let them know I am always happy to meet with students of all ages to discuss civics and the role of county government. Last year I had the opportunity to meet with students in several towns throughout the county including Red Bank, Belmar, Eatontown, Long Branch, Tinton Falls and Asbury Park. Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso are the GOP candidates for Assembly in LD13
The New Jersey Education Association has endorsed Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso, R-Holmdel for reelection to the General Assembly representing the 13th legislative district.
The teachers union issued a * endorsement for the second Assembly seat in the district, encouraging teachers to vote for either Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger, R-Middletown or Barbara Singer, a Democrat and attorney who lives in Holmdel, to replace Amy Handlin the lower chamber. Labor Day weekend is projected to be beautiful. However, Jersey Shore beaches have been experiencing dangerous riptides recently. This trend is expected to continue through the weekend.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden recorded this video earlier this summer with Chief Lifeguard Tim Harmon of Sea Girt to warn of the dangers of riptides and how to avoid a tragedy in the ocean.

Tonight in New Jersey, children will go to bed hungry. Contrary to popular notions about hunger in America, most are not homeless. In fact, most New Jersey families that struggle to put food on the table live in households that have at least one working adult.
In Monmouth County, where I live, and in neighboring Ocean County, one in ten residents don’t know where their next meal will come from, let alone whether if it will be nutritious. One in seven of those ten are children. The anxiety and fear of not knowing is what social services agencies call “food insecurity.”
That is why I am beginning a new chapter in my life this week: leading the effort to end hunger in our community as Chief Executive Officer of Fulfill, formerly the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Fulfill aims to not only help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity today, but to provide them with the resources to become self-sufficient for tomorrow. I am excited join a team of 50 employees and 1,400 volunteers whose mission is to “shorten the line” of those in our communities who are hungry.

Congressman Chris Smith and Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger at the 2016 9/11 remembrance in Middletown
Congressman Chris Smith is running for 21st term in the House of Representatives next year and would be content to run another 4-5 times, according to a interview he had with NJGlobe.
“I’ve never been more enthusiastic about a job in my life,” Smith said. “I hope to have another decade here. I love it that much.”
Smith was responding to rumors that he would retire in 2020. In 2018, MoveOn.Org had a fundraising campaign based upon their lie that the Dean of the New Jersey delegation was retiring.
“It’s a type of smear,” Smith told NJGlobe of the retirement rumors. “It’s factually untrue. It’s unethical.”
