From bar fights to chill fire pits, Jersey Shore nightlife remains a COVID-19 work in progress

The first sign of trouble at Donovan’s Reef Beach Bar in Sea Bright came before even entering the longtime Jersey Shore beachfront hangout rebuilt after being destroyed in Hurricane Sandy.

A bouncer advised the line waiting anxiously for some Saturday night fun that the wait could be a while due to a fight being broken up. A bar fight didn’t bode well for the required social distancing ordered for outdoor restaurants in the age of coronavirus.

Once beyond the entrance, I walked the ramp to the upper level of the expansive outdoor bar and surveyed the scene — a sea of 20-somethings in crop tops a… Read the rest of this entry »

MVC agencies reopen next week. Here’s what drivers need to know.

If there’s an indication of demand for the state Motor Vehicle Commission’s agencies to reopen, it might be the people who showed up at the Bakers Basin agency in Lawrence Township on Tuesday, looking for answers, even though it won’t open for another six days.

Opening day for agencies is June 29, and it will only be for limited transactions that can’t be done online. MVC officials have to process a three-month backlog of these transactions and make sure customers follow the new rules to prevent spread of the coronavirus.

In an exclusive tour, Chief Administrator B. Sue Fulton walked a reporter … Read the rest of this entry »

O’Scanlon: Murphy’s Emergency Powers Need To Be Curtailed

Senator Declan O’Scanlon

By Senator Declan O’Scanlon

“Today, I signed onto a resolution that just strikes me as peculiar. Peculiar in the sense that I never would have imagined the need for this to exist in a democracy. SCR-117 is intended to curtail the Governor’s power to issue emergency executive orders without reapproval by the legislature every 15 days. It’s a proposed constitutional amendment that if passed, would create a ballot question potentially altering our State’s constitution and let the public decide whether a Governor needs to have their power more frequently checked by the Legislature.

Gov. Murphy Presented No Scientific Evidence in Lawsuit Against Asbury Park

Asbury Park, NJ, USA – March 5, 2020: Madam Marie’s fortune telling booth on the boardwalk

By Thomas DeSeno

A review of the pleadings filed on Friday in State v Mayor John Moor and Asbury Park, docket number C-56-20, shows that Governor Murphy filed a complaint against the City and sought an emergent preliminary injunction.  The purpose was to restrain Asbury Park from enforcing their resolution of last Wednesday, where they tried to allow Asbury Park restaurants to conduct indoor dining.

People waiting to read the pleadings to finally see the “data that drives the dates” as Murphy likes to put it, were greatly disappointed.  There was no scientific material attached to the pleadings.
