Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-04) today commended the work of law enforcement in making a speedy arrest of a terrorist suspect thought to be connected to bombing attacks against targets in New Jersey and New York this past weekend.

“The law enforcement response to the initial pipe bomb attack in Ocean County, NJ at a Marine Corps charity race in Seaside Park and the subsequent attacks in New York and North Jersey, has been commendable in its rapid execution,” Smith said. “The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, State and local police, and especially the arresting officers of the Linden, N.J. Police Department, have performed exemplary in the face of a great danger to the public. I hope the injured officers recover quickly, and that any and all of those responsible for these cowardly attacks will be held to account and face justice.

Toni Ann Marletta, 50, of Leonardo, said “I found that out,” when asked by Assistant Prosecutor Meghan Doyle if she was aware that Marissa Procopio had died as a result of being stuck by the car Marletta was driving on Route 36 on July 7, 2015.

In her allocution, Marletta said that she fled the scene of the accident because she had let her insurance lapse two months earlier.  She admitted asking the children, her daughter and two others, who were passengers in the car not to talk about the accident until she figured out what she was going to do about it.

Marletta pleaded guilty to Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident that resulted in a Death and to two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child this morning before Superior Court Judge Ronald Reisner in Freehold.   Under a plea agreement, the prosecution is recommending a sentence of 7 years for Leaving the Scene and 4 years for Endangering—to be served concurrently.  Marletta will also face fines and a license suspension for motor vehicle infractions including having no insurance.

New Jersey Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients can be treated with Medical Marijuana, after conventional treatments have failed, under a bill signed by Governor Chris Christie on Wednesday. The new law took effect upon Christie signing the bill.

The bill, which passed with veto proof majorities in the Assembly and Senate, adds PTSD to the list of debilitating medical conditions that can be legally treated with cannabis under the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act.

In a statement issued with the enactment of the bill, Christie cited the increase in PTSD among military veterans and others since the terrorist attack upon the United States on September 11, 2001.  Christie said he was directing the Commissioner of the Department of Health to promulgate regulations to deter the abuse of medical marijuana that might result from the enactment of this new law.
