Golden reelected Monmouth GOP Chair, Says NJ GOP Chairman is Impudent and Ineffective
Shaun Golden, the Monmouth County Sheriff, was reelected Chairman of the Monmouth GOP on Tuesday evening during a convention of the County Committee conducted via Zoom. He was unopposed for his fourth two year term as Chairman.
Golden had harsh words for NJ Republican Chairman Doug Steinhardt during his remarks to the County Committee.
“Our state Party needs new leadership,” Golden told MMM on a phone interview the morning after the zoomvention.
“Steinhardt has been impudent and ineffective,” Golden said of the NJGOP Chairman who doubles as the Warren County Republican Chairman and is former Governor Jim Florio’s law partner. “He is scurrying around the state and using Party resources to promote himself while failing to grow the Party. There is no support for statewide candidates. He’s neglecting the fundraising needs of U.S. Senate nominee Rik Mehta and Republican congressional candidates including Congressman Chris Smith and Christian Onuoha.”
Onuoha is the Republican nominee for Congress challenging Rep Frank Pallone, Jr in the 6th Congressional District.
Golden went on to criticize Steinhardt’s lack of leadership within the Party beyond his failure to support Mehta and the congressional candidates financially.
“The County Chairs have not met in seven months! Not even a zoom meeting or conference call,” Golden said. “There’s no communication with the County Parties, no talking points, no policy points, no support. If not for their data services, the State Party would be completely useless regarding our ongoing success in Monmouth County.
Golden was also critical of the composition of the NJGOP’s redistricting committee, which will negotiate with the Democrats committee to redraw the legislative districts once of the 2020 U.S. Census is complete.
“The two most important Republican Counties, Monmouth and Ocean, are not represented in redistricting,” Golden said. “That is disrespectful and and disgusting.”
Steinhardt has been state Party Chairman since November of 2017 and Warren County Republican Chairman since 2004. He is considered a likely candidate for the Republican nomination for governor in 2021.
Golden has been widely mentioned as a possible candidate for governor next year, but has lately been downplaying such speculation.
Steinhardt did not respond to a text sent at 2:58 p.m. offering him an opportunity to comment. If he responds this post will be updated.
