Of Monmouth Freeholder Candidates, Only Curley Would Stick Property Taxpayers With His Medical Bills

The Democrat and Republican candidates for Monmouth County Freeholder each said they would not accept County funded health insurance if elected to the part time position next month.

Republican candidates, Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger and Hazlet Deputy Mayor Sue Kiley, have long opposed part-time elected officials exploiting the taxpayers by taking excessive benefits.   Democrat candidates Larry Luttrell and Amber Gesslein each told MMM that would not accept taxpayer funded health benefits if they are elected.

The Independent candidate, disgraced Freeholder John P. Curley, has been sticking Monmouth County property taxpayers with the cost of his medical care for most of the last two years and he opposed a recent resolution against the practice.

Curley contributes less than $1049 annually towards the cost of his County funded medical bills, according to County Counsel Michael Fitzgerald’s comments during a August 23, 2018 public meeting.  Curley quietly enrolled in the County health plan in 2016, after vehemently speaking out against the practice earlier that year.

The County self insures its health plan, meaning that Curley’s medical bills are a direct cost to the County.  HIPPA regulations prevent full disclosure of the cost of Curley’s medical care, however, he has frequently publicly disclosed that he has Type II diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, which are not inexpensive to treat.

Curley told MMM that the drug injected into his eyes to treat his diabetic retinopathy is also used to treat colon cancer.  Maybe that is why he has such a shitty outlook.

    I don’t think Freeholder Curry’s healthcare is self-insured. It looks like only employees hired before 1994 have the option of enrolling in the county’s self-insured plan.
