U.S. Attorney issues new subpoenas in Christie investigation

Federal prosecutors have widened their investigation into the relationship between Governor Chris Christie’s office and his 2013 reelection campaign, according to a report at The Wall Street Journal.

WSJ reports that U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman’s office has subpoenaed documents related to government meetings that Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop claims were canceled after he declined to endorse Christie’s reelection.

The Christie probe, known as “Bridgegate” started as an investigation into the George Washington Bridge lane closures in September of 2013 which were widely speculated to be a retaliation against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for declining to endorse the Governor after a months long courtship by the campaign, Christie’s Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs and Port Authority personnel.

The federal investigation is focused, in part, on how staffers of the Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs office separated official business from campaign work, according to the WSJ report.
