Is Mitt Romney getting a pass?

Is Mitt Romney “getting a pass” from the media for only releasing two years of tax returns and a summary of twenty years of returns?

In a column titled The Hypocrisy of the Far Right published in the local Patches, Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal says Romney is getting a pass.

Really Vin?  Really?

It seems to me that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who for weeks lied to the American people with his claim that Romney didn’t pay taxes at all, is the one who is getting a pass.

Did Republicans give Romney a pass?  Gopal would have us believe that Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity are more influential Republican leaders than Governor Chris Christie.  Christie called on Romney to release all of his tax returns back in January.

Gopal says Limbaugh, Coulter and Hannity have “hijacked” the Republican Party:

So why does Mitt Romney get a pass? Because the Republican Party has been hijacked by Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and their friends, who dedicate every second of their “news” programs in destroying the character of our President.

Really Vin?  Really?

Destroying Obama’s character?  The Obama camp accused Romney of being responsible for woman’s death!

Romney paid $1.9 million in taxes in 2011.  More than he had to pay, because he did not fully take advantage of the charitable giving deduction.  He did not deduct all $4 million + of the charitable donations he made.  How much coverage is that getting in the mainstream media?

Who in American political history has every gotten a bigger pass than Obama?

Gopal, a confirmed sore loser, is simply doing what he’s been told: faithfully reciting the Democrat talking points. Which is easy to do when you check your brain at the door, which is the requirement for Democrat operatives. Cases in point: Chucky “Say It’s Extreme” Schumer; Debbie Whatsername Schmuck; Andrea “War on Women” Mitchell; Joyless Beharharhardeeharhar. And, of course, the POTUS, who can’t speak intelligibly without the TOTUS and frequent direct-brain transfers from Iranian native Valerie Jarrett. The incessant yammering of fact-free talking points — in unison — resembles the cacophony of millions of braying donkeys all Skyping each other at the same time, amplified through megaphones. It’s impossible not to get a headache listening to all that shinola. The challenge is to refute it, firmly, loudly, and repeatedly, as Art does here. This is how we win. Challenge, refute. Every time. Do not back down to them.

For those of you who don’t know, Vin is the token liberal Democrat in Monmouth County. He is one of those guys who still buys into the hope and change BS, and obviously wants to see the muslim in the White House re-elected so he can finish destroying the country. Not sure what level of dementia states that Romney, or any other Republican gets a pass from the mainstream media, but it is pretty serious. If I were you Vin I’d be worried, what with all of the garbage, biased reporting against Romney, and the race still virtually tied. In the meantime, four Americans were murdered and dragged through the streets, the administration lied about it being in response to a stupid video and not Al Queda, muslims are rioting, true unemployment is at 16%, gas is over $4 a gallon, the debt is accumulating at $3.4 billion and Obama is out partying with Jay Z and Beyonce. The liberal press can try and hide that crap, but thanks to Fox and the internet, the real Americans are informed and motivated. Btw, anyone heard from the sniveling little liar Harry Reid who told the press that Romney paid no taxes when in fact he paid 14% in taxes and gave over 30% to charity? When will they report on that?

  8. Rick Ambrosia said at 6:28 pm on September 22nd, 2012:

Of course he didn’t take the full deduction…then his tax rate would have been around 9%…not a good number when the average secretary pays much more than that…c’mon Art….how nice would it be to pay around 9% of your income to the feds. We pay around 26%…and are barely keeping our head above water. I wish I could take a deduction for a horse…if I had one! We have 2 dogs…no deductions there.

I also pointed out that my father, God rest his soul…served in the Marines on Tarawa and other islands in the Pacific during WW2…he lived on social security and a small check from the Marines for being wounded. He was in the 47% bracket that Mittens has so much disdain for. He didn’t pay any federal income tax…but he sure did stop the enemy during WW2. What a victim…Romney can’t get off the national stage fast enough. He’s a disgrace.

  9. Chris said at 9:41 pm on September 22nd, 2012:

Romney paid $1.9 mil in taxes and donated slightly over $4 mil to charities (that usually help the 47%). So he funded the 47% by about $6,000,000.

Rick, how much have you contributed last year to the Government beneficiaries? $25k? $50k? $80k?

And of course, if Romney would donate all his annual income to charity and would therefore pay $0 in taxes, Rick would scream that Romney is stealing from the Government by not paying taxes.

  11. Bob English said at 2:53 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

Romeny can obviously do whatever he wants to do regarding when and if he ever follows his fathers tradition and releases 12 years of tax returns. If he had done so before now, the issue would have been put to rest long ago even if he was paying an even lower rate than he paid the past two years.

His excuse that the D’s would criticize his returns does not hold water since they are already doing him for his refusal to release additioanl years.

  12. Bob English said at 2:55 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

typos in last paragraph…should read: His excuse that the D’s would criticize his returns does not hold water since they are already doing that for his refusal to release additional years.

  13. Proud Republican said at 3:32 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

You know what Bob English? This whole nonsense about Romney’s tax returns is just typical Democrat diversion BS so people want focus on Obama’s abysmal record. If Romney did anything wrong, as the puny little liar Harry Reid said, the IRS would have flagged it. Funny how the same dirtbag Democrats didn’t lambast the rich gigolo John Kerry for being a rich guy. This will soon backfire on the Democrats though, since it shows that not only did he pay a lot of taxes, but he gave way more to charity than the community activist in the White House. Romney is a decent, honest, generous, successful businessman, who loves this country and will restore integrity to the White House. So I agree with the Democrats there – the choice is clear.

  19. Bob English said at 8:04 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

Proud Republican: I did not mention a thing about Romeny doing anything illegal and note that you are the one that raised the issue so maybe you have information that the rest of us don’t you would like to share???

My post also has nothing to do with John Kerry’s money or Romney’s money. Speaking of John Kerry though, I wonder where all the swiftboat assholes are this year??? They had no trouble disparaging John Kerry’s military service so I wonder what they would say about Romney getting a draft deferment so he could go proselytize in France instead of going to Vietnam like Kerry did???

All I was noting in my previous post that Romeny could long ago do what his Republican primary opponents called upon him to do, which was to release several years of tax returns and get the issue behind him. As long as he does not do that there is going to be a perception that he is hiding something.

  20. Proud Republican said at 8:11 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

You can see the frustration in Little Ricky and Bob E’s posts growing every day. Look at the facts – the mainstream media is so far in the tank for Obama, the bottoms of their feet are covered with water. And still the race, according to the polls, is tied. Combine that with the fact that four Americans were murdered and dragged through the streets, real unemployment is at 16%, gas is over $4, debt is accumulating at $3.5 billion daily, muslims are rioting and killing in the name of hating America, food stamp/welfare use is skyrocketing and what is one of the headlines? “High school pictures of Mitt Romney surface.” What a joke. My prediction? The real patriots, you know, the ones who keep this country afloat are going to come out in force for Mitt Romney, and the Obama leeches are going to stay home, watching Maury Povich yell “you ARE the father” while sucking down bottle after bottle of Night Train. So keep laughing Rick and Bob, the country ain’t dead yet!

  21. Proud Republican said at 8:28 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

Good God up in heaven, it’s a full time job correcting Bob English. I said that the sniveling little liar Harry Reid accused Romney of wrongdoing, not you. That is all you Democrats have – outlandish accusations to deflect attention from the abject failure in the White House. Turns out Romney was right on Libya, right on the 47% of non-taxpayers, right about Obama’s lust for redistribution, right about the suffocating debt, right about the Democrat job-killing policies, and right about the need to elect him in November.

  22. Bob English said at 9:44 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

Right on Libya??? If you are talking about Romneys first statement, every fact check site and numerous Republicans said Romney was wrong…and you think he was right??? lol How can you possibly defend what he said??

You actually think everything Romney said about the 47% is right including that they think they are victims? You and Romney might be the only people on earth that would agree. Funny how most Republican Seante candidates are disavowing that statement and saying they disagree with Romney…..but you know he is right, lol!!! Is there anything Romney could say that you would disagree with??? Romeny is so detached and out of touch with the middle class that he does not realize that most of that 47% group is made up of people that work but do not earn enough to owe federal income tax, people receiving social security and have no other income and other groups such as the disabled (including veterans) and students. Note that almost 2/3 of that 47% are employed and paying payroll and state taxes.

  23. Proud Republican said at 9:58 pm on September 23rd, 2012:

Lawn work is tiring, but correcting Bob English is downright exhausting. Romney said 47% of the population doesn’t pay federal income taxes. 110% correct. And most of them do see themselves as victims. He is not talking about retirees or veterans or any other contributor. He’s talking about the unemployable, tattooed, pierced, disheveled, pot smoking, dropout, anti-social swine who bang kids out like they’re on an assembly line and have no interest in providing for themselves or their offspring. And to top it off, he was referring to a campaign strategy where his message of lower taxes won’t resonate with people who don’t pay taxes to begin with. Got it?

You see folks, they refuse to answer the charges against The Dear Leader, there is NOTHING positive about The Regime’s record, so they resort to attacking other people just like Romney with “Mittens has NO integrity left…none, zilch, nada”

Instead, they give Harry “Despicable Me” Reid a pass for lying about Romney paying taxes.

How DO you look at yourselves in the mirror each day Salad Boy & Lil Bobbie, what DO you do when the demons come to tell you that The Obummbler is a fraud and that you have to lie and be deceitful about him.

  27. Bob English said at 8:15 am on September 24th, 2012:

Proud: No matter what you think Romney meant to say about what part of the 47% think of themselves as “victims”, he did not distinguish between the groups you referred to and the working poor, those that receive Social Security, disabled (including vets), students etc.

As the President said, maybe Romeny should get out more often and spend more time with people in the above groups.

  28. Art Gallagher said at 8:46 am on September 24th, 2012:

    Bob,

The more you mischaracterise the 47% video the less credible your argument becomes.

It was obvious to any fair minded person viewing the video that Romney was talking about “not caring” about winning the votes of the 47%, not that he doesn’t care about their lives.

  29. Rick Ambrosia said at 9:29 am on September 24th, 2012:

Then Art, maybe you should stop mischaracterising the “you didn’t build that” mantra of the right and use it in the context it was meant to be. At least, when the President said that…he did explain what it meant. Romney, on the other hand, didn’t explain anything about the 47% comments except “those people” think of themselves as victims. My father was in that category, and he fought in WW2 aand never thought of himself as a “victim”…And really, I don’t think he cares about “those people”…..

All is fair in politics, I suppose.

  30. Art Gallagher said at 9:32 am on September 24th, 2012:

    Rick,

Romney did explain. See the 60 minutes clips above.

The tone and context of Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech have been debated here extensively. I think TR said it best.

  31. Bob English said at 9:41 am on September 24th, 2012:

Art…I am just going by what he said so I don’t see how that becomes less credible. Note that when people defend what Romney said, they almost never mention what he “meant” to say….they just go on and on how Romeny is correct.

Maybe the best thing to do would be for Romeny or his supporters to come up with the actual percentage of people who do not pay federal income taxes that does NOT include the working poor, those that receive Social Security, disabled (including vets), students etc. (also people who are receiving unemplyment insurance through no fault of their own.)

That might be something everyone can agree on.

  32. Art Gallagher said at 9:53 am on September 24th, 2012:

    Bob,

No, you are not just going by what he said. You’re a smart guy. You know the context in which he was speaking. You’re playing Chris Matthews to Rick’s Rachel Maddow.

He meant what he said, in the context of winning votes…he said he didn’t care about winning those votes because that 47% were not going to vote for him regardless. His message doesn’t appeal to them. His challenge, as he accurately said at the fundraiser it to win the majority of the 5% of undecided voters.

“Maybe the best things would be….” Yeah, right. Best for what purpose?

  33. Rick Ambrosia said at 11:51 am on September 24th, 2012:

Yeah Art…Hindsight is such a wonderful tool, isn’t it? He’s had weeks to come up with some kind of lame explanation…I think that everyone knows exactly what he meant at the time.

  34. Art Gallagher said at 1:48 pm on September 24th, 2012:

What do you mean “weeks” Rachel Rick?

Mother Jones released the 47% tape one week ago.

I think that everyone knows exactly what he meant too…that he wasn’t going to waste resources trying to change your vote, and that of the rest of the Obamamaniacs core supporters.

It was clear to me what he was saying the first time I heard it. I think it was clear to you too Rick.

He had ample time to come up with some stupid excuse as to why he discounted half the country as “victims”. He wasn’t saying that just to be cute. He really thinks that “those people” are only looking for handouts…all 47% of them. Disabled, veterans, elderly, low income…and, most of them live in the south…his stronghold.

Art…without beating the subject to death I totally disagree. Many of the people in the 47% that Romeny referred to are his supporters especially senior citizens and parts of the 47% in blue states.

I actually dont think Romney understood who made up the 47% at the time he made his remarks, otherwise why would he have said what he said? I’m still trying to figure out if Romeny thinks that everyone in that 47% should be paying some kind of minimum tax rate. That would be contrary to something Republicans used to brag about which was getting low income earners off of the federal tax roles.
