NJ State Government Shuts Down

Without a budget from the Democrat controlled State Legislature, Governor Chris Christie ordered non-essential government operations to cease.

In an Executive Order issued at the midnight June 30 deadline for a State Budget, Christie declared a state of emergency and ordered that State Police, state correctional facilities, key child welfare services, state hospitals and treatment facilities, NJ TRANSIT, and operations linked to the health, safety, and welfare of the public, including certain environmental and health monitoring will continue to operate.

Gambling is essential to the operation of New Jersey. The state lottery will not be affected by the closure. Atlantic City Casinos and racetracks will remain open with state oversight.

Terrance Weldon, former Ocean Twp Mayor and Asbury Park City Manager Died Today

Terrance D. Weldon, 1948-2017

Terrance Weldon, the former Ocean Township Mayor and Asbury Park city manager who was a central figure in the Operation Bid Rig scandal, died today at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, according to an entry on the website of the Buckley Funeral Home.  Weldon was 68 years old.

On October 10, 2002, Weldon pleaded guilty to federal charges of accepting $60,000 in bribes from three developers between 1998 and 2001.  He remained out of prison until January of 2008 while he cooperated with U.S. Attorney Chris Christie’s Operation Bid Rig into public corruption in Monmouth County.  His cooperation led to the convictions of Howard Schoor, the principle of the Schoor DePalma engineering firm, and three other guilty pleas.

U.S. District Judge William H. Walls rejected pleas for leniency by both the U.S Attorney’s Office and Weldon’s attorney when sentencing Weldon to 58 months in federal prison and a $20,000 fine on August 27, 2007. New Jersey officials stripped Weldon of his $20,000 per year public pension in February of 2008.

Is Christie setting Guadagno up for failure?

If Governor Chris Christie was still popular in New Jersey, or Washington, the New Jersey press corps would be pushing a narrative that Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno “is no Chris Christie.”

But Christie is less popular in New Jersey than Anthony Weiner is with Hillary Clinton supporters. Thus the narrative is that Guadagno has been Christie’s second in command and has stood behind him (literally and figuratively) for seven years while New Jersey’s economy has remained stagnant, our credit rating downgraded continuously, and traffic was a mess in Fort Lee for a few days in 2013.

Thus, as Guadagno is running to replace Christie next January, she has to show New Jersey voters that she is no Chris Christie while threading a needle to avoid Christie’s famously vindictive wrath. That’s a difficult endeavor.

Christie acts to clear names of N.J. defendants found not guilty of crimes

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie on Friday signed a new law requiring prosecutors in New Jersey to take down or update public statements about people who have been acquitted of crimes.
