Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon
TRENTON, N.J. – A month after releasing his report of the Arbitration Award Task Force that recommends permanently extending the cap, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) proposed a comprehensive plan to ensure the policies continue to keep property taxes from rapidly increasing. He released the following statement:
“If we’re going to be honest, as effective policy makers it’s incumbent upon us to do the hard work, master the facts and policy nuances before us, and present cogent proposals to the public and the legislature. This list of policy proposals is me doing my job.
“The inescapable logic of permanently tying the arbitration award cap to the property tax cap isn’t hard to grasp. It is fourth-grade math. Any candidate or legislator who claims he needs ‘more information’ or that ‘all the facts aren’t in’ is feigning, in most cases, stupidity to avoid responsibility. Parents try to teach their children to reject such self-demoralizing choices. Read the rest of this entry »

I recently launched a website about my native town of Monmouth Beach and it just so happens that a resident of that great community is running for Governor of New Jersey, Kim Guadagno.
So I thought I’d offer some local perspective on a state concern. I’m backing Kim on November 7 and it’s an easy vote for me.
I’ve known Kim since she first ran for political office in Monmouth Beach back 12 years ago. As I’ve followed her career, I’ve learned that Kim already has to be exceptional just to survive. She’s a Republican from New Jersey (a state that twice voted against Abraham Lincoln), is married to a seasoned judge (husband Mike recently retired from the NJ Superior Court) and is mother to three smart kids (some went to school with my children for a while).
In light of the recent vile and mean-spirited Star-Ledger editorial endorsement of Phil Murphy in the governor’s race, I’d like to offer the main reasons why Kim gets my vote: Read the rest of this entry »

Two high school football officials walked off the field in protest Friday night after players from Monroe High School in Somerset County knelt during the national anthem before the team’s game against visiting Colts Neck. The officials, Ernie Lunardelli, 54, and his son, Anthony Lunardelli, 27, stood for the anthem and then abruptly left the field… Read the rest of this entry »

These days it seems that in order to oppose someone politically, it is necessary to “ist” them. If they disagree with you they must be a fascist, communist, racist, sexist, socialist, etc. I don’t need to do that to voice my opposition to Assembly members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey. Demonizing them is not necessary.
Mr. Houghtaling and Ms. Downey are not evil, they’re just incompetent as elected representatives. They voted yes on a budget that took state aid away from many school districts in LD11, including Ocean Township. During the LD11 debate, Mr. Houghtaling was asked if New Jersey should become a Sanctuary State since his party’s candidate for Governor said it should. Mr. Houghtaling responded that he didn’t have an opinion on the issue. I dare say he might be the only person in New Jersey who doesn’t. He still hasn’t come up with an answer. Middlesex County has been a sanctuary county since June when their all Democrat Freeholder Board voted to release criminally charged illegal aliens from custody in defiance of a federal order that the inmates be held for 48 hours until U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement Officers take custody of them.
Last week ICE agents arrested 36 of the criminally charged illegals, including a Filipino charged with sexual assault of a minor, a Mexican charged with child abuse, and a Mexican charged with criminal restraint of a minor, that Warden Mark Cranston had released from custody. New Jersey’s public pension and health-benefit system is a looming disaster that threatens the future of the state. According to my research and a recent report by WNYC – under new, more realistic accounting standards, the total amount of the state’s unfunded public-pension and retiree healthcare liabilities is $253 billion. The state budget is… Read the rest of this entry »

AVON-BY-THE-SEA — From the Clinton Hill neighborhood in Newark to the beloved Jersey Shore, Schneider’s Restaurant has been serving generations of families since 1960. But early on Saturday, the family-owned restaurant, which served authentic German cuisine and homemade ice cream, fell victim to a fire that tore through the inside, leaving parts of the structure the… Read the rest of this entry »
