Cullari Assails Little’s Record as Mayor

Ernesto Cullari’s primary campaign for the GOP congressional nomination in the 6th district of New Jersey followed this mornings rebuke of Monmouth County Tea Party Coalition leader Frank Cotton with an attack on former Highlands Mayor Anna Little’s conservative credentials.

“A Record of Backdoor Tax Increases,”  is how the Cullari campaign characterised Little’s tenure as mayor from 2008 through 2010, citing  borough ordinances:

So-called TEA (taxed enough already) Party activists and former mayor Anna Little has a strange obsession with taxing residents of the Highlands through back door fees, fines, and license increases during her time as mayor.

During the worst recession since the Great Depression mayor Anna Little sneakily increased numerous borough fees, fines, and licenses pushing struggling families and businesses closer to the edge!
* Dog license fee……………………………………………………. 208% increase
* Mercantile (Business) license fee …………………………… 100% increase
* Liquor license fee …………………………………………………. 20% increase
* Copy of vital statistic records fee …………………………… 200% increase
* Maximum fine within Highlands …………………………… 100% increase
* Sewer rate……………………………………………………………. 40% increase
* Garage sale license fee…………………………………………… new fee of $5
* Property maintenance fine…….. new fine of $500 a day for violations
* Noise ordinance fine………………………………………. new fine of $5,000
* No lid on trash can…………………………………………. new fine of $2,000
* Failure to recycle …………………………………………… new fine of $1,000

Little has not returned a call for comment and her campaign does not have a spokes person.

This is just the beginning, according to a source familiar with the Cullari campaign’s plan for the next month.  Little’s record as mayor, freeholder and the public record of her law practice will all be subject to public scrutiny over the remaining 32 days of the primary campaign.

    When Chris Christie took office, the toll for a truck crossing the George Washington bridge was $40. Chris Christie approved increasing that toll to $90, a 125% increase. When can we expect to see Ernesto Cullari to criticize Chris Christie’s “backdoor tax increase?”

    was $10, now $28… WOW realy big increase….. Cost covering measure to pay animal control costs.

    * Mercantile (Business) license fee …………………………… 100% increase
    Was 25 now 50 but includes fingerprint costs, I think the police couldn’t do fingerprints anymore so they had to send them out for a fee.

    * Copy of vital statistic records fee …………………………… 200% increase
    I think this one went from $5 to $20, was not covering the cost of the paper

    Everyone of these are fees for the people that use the services, NOT TAXES.

    You get the idea… bull… dinky.

    Mayor Anna had a flat budget, a great budget review committee.

    These guys are willing to do anything to win…

    If they can’t win on who Ernesto is then Ernesto don’t deserve to win.

    I won’t get into the mud slinging, but I really wanted to thank Highlands Guy for making sense. Ernesto has nothing to go on to win, so he and his campaign are going for the jugler. I think people will see through this. They are sick and tired of negativity when we are supposed to be on the same side. This will backfire. These people are the one’s who invented “dirty politics”. From what I hear, its a very bad reflection on Cullari.

    I lived in Highlands and Anna Little was one of the worst mayors ever.

    Highlands guy- trying to justify any increase in fees is ridiculous.. WAKE UP!!! She raises fees on A LOT of stuff and that is when she was there. She was absent half the time and still got paid.

    Personally, I applaud Ernesto for revealing the truth.. believe me.. there is A LOT more on Anna which can be revealed. I am going to give him a call and make sure he knows it too.

  6. sure worked for Romney, no? said at 11:19 pm on May 3rd, 2012:

    the negativity, I mean.. so now he’s our guy, because we just have to be rid of this pres..facts are facts, records are records,and of course a new challenger has more meat to chew on, but it can be/is spun and interpreted any way one wants to.. my guess is, Little wins on name id., then whomever’s mad at her will have the choice of voting against Frank, or throwing a vote away on some 3rd party person,again.. with the country literally hanging in the balance,all the craziness and minutiae of the campaign process seems so depressing and futile, at times….

    Anna the union protector was the swing vote for the Highlands Democrats to protect the local PBA union by agreeing to pay the union a large lump sum if the new governing body merged police forces with another town.

    Unfortunately she didn’t leave the new Mayor with a “Little” budget gap, she left quite a large one.

  9. Highlands guy said at 5:21 pm on May 4th, 2012:

    interesting how ernestos minions feel free to propogate bulll-onie propoganda. The mayor served rice notices on both the police department and borough employees. The police gave back 800k.. Borough employes didn’t negotiate. Those are the facts. The mayor worked FOR the citizens of higlands, not for the unions. What middletowner posted is a bold faced lie.

  10. Middletowner said at 7:11 am on May 5th, 2012:

    An $800k giveback when Highlands could have saved over $1.4m by a merger? Sounds like a great deal for the people of Highlands.

  11. Highlands guy said at 10:28 pm on May 5th, 2012:

    Middletowner: Problem is that deal was never on the table…. Where are you getting your info from??? Lets see the proof. Any discussion about a merger happened AFTER Nolan became mayor. Your timing is off. The facts are on :

    http://mayorlittle.blogspot.com/2010/12/truth-about-highlands-borough-budget.html

    If you can prove you point please do, otherwise cut out the BS please.

  12. Middletowner said at 11:24 am on May 6th, 2012:

    Nolan knew he would be the Mayor in 2011 when he won in November 2010. Lame duck Little pushed forward with the proposal to give the huge payout if a merger happened at the December meeting. Check the minutes and check Nolan questioning Little.

    While Nolan did become Mayor when the press picked up on the story, word was on the street before January of 2011.
