Senate Democrats Demand That Christie Appoint One Of Their Own To Supreme Court

Democrats in the New Jersey State Senate are upping the ante in their unprecedented exercise of legislative power over judicial appointments.

In the wake of their rejection of Phillip Kwon’s nomination to the State Supreme Court, the Democrats are now demanding that Governor Chris Christie nominate a Democrat to the Court.

“The governor may be entitled to his own nominees for cabinet posts, but we will not allow him to pack the Supreme Court,” Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said. “The governor must work with us to put together a balanced tandem of candidates for the court. The Senate will not consider anything less.”

NJ.com reports that Sweeney’s spokesman Derek Roseman said that Sweeney was telling Christie to nominate a Democrat.

During his press conference following the Senate Judiciary Committee’s rejection of Kwon, Christie revealed that he had complied with Sweeney’s demand of diversity in his appointment of Kwon, the first Korean-American ever nominated, and Bruce Harris, an Africa-American who is the first openly homosexual nominee.

Reshaping the Supreme Court into a less activist body that does not legislate from the bench was a hallmark promise of Christie’s gubernatorial campaign.  During his first two years in office, Christie has been openly critical of the Court and unabashed about his commitment to change it.

Kwon is well qualified and would have made a great justice. This is a message to the Governor. Maybe he should discontinue the practice of sticking it to the Republican suburban municipalities and stop giving the state aid in the form of “transitional Aid” and “aid to distressed cities” to Newark, Camden, Patterson and Elizabeth. See how strong they stood behind you yesterday?

    Governor Lesson: BINGO

Perhaps it is time to take off the gloves and stop all state spending in those democrat entitlement bastions and play some real hardball.

The best defense is always a good offensive.

can you imagine if they were in- charge with Gov., and we demanded “one of our own”??.. they’d laugh us outa Trenton!.. they are amazingly brash and arrogant- but, we need to take a page out of their book, and never compromise with them, never give them any appointee or other job: when they win, we get told to sit in the back and shut up..as the doofy Pres. says: ” elections have consequences”.. meaning: we’ll continue to submit/appoint our own, just as you do, too bad if you don’t like it!.. the worst thing we can do is to not find conservative, constructionist judges, at any level: it is time to stop them from legislating their lib causes from the bench, it has ruined NJ, and if Obama gets re-elected, the Supreme Ct. will be wrecked, for decades, as well!..

The trouble with above is you are describing courageous actions with Republicans—which is almost as wrong as using Dims and ethics in the same sentence.

  7. Dems are the problems said at 11:47 am on March 25th, 2012:

Ok Tea Party, do you get it now? Do you understand where the problem lies? As Brian said, the Dems are s-bags who are bent on destroying this state and maintaining the control of the unions on the taxpayers money. The Democrats want to keep the morons on the Supreme Court so we can get more brilliant Abbot and COAH decisions rammed down our throats. Every Republican, Independent and patriotic Democrat must unite to remove every one of these dirtbag officeholders with a D next to their name from office. Starting with Mr. Union himself Steve Sweeney.
