Murphy to release state prisoners

Governor Phil Murphy announced this morning that he is ordering the release of low risk inmates in New Jersey’s State Prison system in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murphy said the pandemic has impacted corrections personnel as well as inmates.

Low risk prisoners who are eligible for parole or whose sentences are due to expire will be released to home confinement after a complete screening for safety.

No high risk prisoners like murders will be released he said during his briefing this morning.

Murphy said he was balancing the need for medical safety for corrections personnel and inmates and the need for public safety.
