Aaron Davis, Man Who Attempted To Drown Dog In Highlands, Surrenders To Authorities

Aaron D. Davis, 36, of Long Branch, the man charged with the leaving a dog, now named River, to drown in a cage on the banks of the Shrewsbury River in Highlands, surrendered to law enforcement authorities this morning, according to an announcement by Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni.
Davis was charged last Friday with third degree Animal Cruelty – Attempting to Cause Death or Serious Bodily Injury to an Animal and disorderly persons offenses of Abandonment of a Domestic Animal, Failure to Provide Necessary Care and Failure to Provide Proper Shelter.
At approximately 6:15 a.m. on July 31, Jennifer Vaz of Highlands discovered River in a cage on the banks of the Shrewbury River near Veteran’s Park in Highlands. Vaz brought the dog to the Highlands Police Department and Animal Control was contacted. When Animal Control officers responded to the site of the canine’s rescue, they found the cage almost submerged by the rising tide.

A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office SPCA Division and the Highlands and Long Branch police departments, determined that Davis had abandoned the caged dog near the water’s edge in an attempt to drown the animal.
Davis is in the custody of the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending the outcome of his detention hearing in Superior Court tomorrow.
Davis faces 6 1/2 years in prison if convicted of all the offenses he is charged with.

According to Vinelink.com and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s website, Aaron Davis (DOB: 12/16/1983) is 34 years-old and not 36 years-old as was reported above.
