Text ‘CRAIG’ to 77944 to help Thorne Middle School win $10K for school supplies
You can help Thorne Middle School in Middletown win $10,000 from WPIX-TV by texting the word CRAIG to 77944 starting at 8am on Friday morning through 9am Monday morning, according to Middletown Patch’s Carly Baldwin.
Carly reports:
Thorne was selected out of over 500 middle schools as a finalist to win the grand prize. WPIX 11 was at the school Monday, interviewing five students. On Friday morning, Nov. 3, look for Thorne’s segment to air at 7:40 a.m. on the WPIX 11 Morning News (channel 11).
The winner is selected purely by the number of texts sent. If Thorne won, they would spend the money on possibly re-designing the media center, creating maker-spacers and making it more of a technology hub, said Thorne principal Tom Olausen. Special-ed teacher Kristyn Corace was the one who originally submitted Thorne for the competition.
According to WPIX, 2017 is the second year that the TV station is holding the Fuel My School contest.
Each year, school teachers in the US spend an average of $500 out-of-pocket on classroom supplies (Forbes).
PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is pleased to announce FUEL MY SCHOOL, a station initiative to help public school students “fuel their school” will be returning for a second year.
but, other than salaries and benefits for teachers, admins, service people, what does the taxpayer get for their money, up there? Don’t they make the families buy their own kids’ school supplies, now? Don’t we already fund additional programs like free school lunches, etc? I don’t deny kids need supplies, but, how much extra are we all supposed to provide??
