Democratic Councilman Michael DuPont told MMM that he will file for a recount of the election results in the Borough that having him losing the seat that he has held for nine years to Young Republican Micheal Whalen by 3 votes.

“This is a close race with a very low turnout,” DuPont said in a phone interview with MMM, “It is important that every vote be counted and the result is accurate.”

Recount applications are due with the Board of Elections by November 18.

Red Bank Republican Chairman Sean DiSomma said, “We respect Councilman DuPont’s right to file for a recount.  We’re confident that the result will stand. We’re looking forward to Mark Taylor and Michael Whelan taking office in January and bringing Red Bank into the next generation.”

Taylor and Whelan issued the following joint statement:

“We are deeply grateful to the residents of Red Bank for your confidence in us, and we look forward to demonstrating our commitment to you and to our town by acting on the promises we made, and being transparent while doing so.

Although the close vote count means that our opponents will likely request a recount, we believe the residents have spoken, and the residents are saying they want a change. In each of the last three years, the highest number of votes have gone to non-incumbents, this year by the highest margin ever. The appetite for change in Red Bank’s leadership is clearly growing. While we understand the inclination to force a recount – campaigning is hard work, and we wouldn’t want to concede without being absolutely sure of the votes, either – we also believe that a recount in this case is actually a failure to listen to Red Bank’s voters. They’ve been asking for change for years – it’s time to honor that request.

Thank you for your faith in us and for sharing our vision for Red Bank. We are truly grateful, and we will not let you down.”

Hope the count holds like it did for Eatontown’s new mayor, who wound up winning by two votes- and is doing fine.. Good luck to the new majority: stick together, so you can make the much- needed changes to Red Bank! -A win is a win, now, get it all done!
