Republican Romp in Monmouth County
Monmouth County voters overwhelming elected Sheriff Shaun Golden and Freeholder Director Tom Arnone to second terms yesterday. Deputy Freeholder Director won her second election in as many years, earning her first full term as a freeholder. DiMaso was elected last year to complete the term of Assemblyman Rob Clifton.
Golden defeated criminal defense attorney Rueben Scolavino with 102,840 votes. 58,923 people voted for Scolavino.
Only Governor Chris Christie, who earned 70.6% of the vote in Monmouth County, 122,928, outpolled Golden.
Freeholders Arnone and DiMaso bested their Democratic opponents Brian Froelich of Spring Lake and Larry Luttrell of Holmdel by an almost 2-1 margin. Arnone got 98,832 votes, Dimaso 95,829. Froelich, who ran for the House of Representative against Congressman Chris Smith last year came in third with 58,450 votes and Luttrell, who was endorsed by the Asbury Park Press, received 56,394 votes.
In the legislative races, Republicans dominated.
In the 11th Legislative District, Senator Jennifer Beck and Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande, New Jersey’s only all women delegation, cruised over Neptune Township Committeemen Dr. Michael Brantley (for Senate) and Kevin McMillion (Assembly) and Red Bank Councilman Ed Zipprich , who was the low vote getter in 11.
In the 12th district which includes portions of Middlesex, Ocean and Burlington counties in addition to western Monmouth County, Senator Sam Thompson and Assemblyman Ron Dancer and Clifton won decisively.
Senator Joe Kyrillos and Assembly Members Amy Handlin and Declan O’Scanlon dominated in the 13th District of northern Monmouth County. Kryillos won 68.11% of the vote against Joseph Marques. Handlin and O’Scanlon defeated public defender Allison Friedman and dog groomer Matthew Morehead by an almost 2-1 margin.
In the 30th district which includes parts of Ocean County, Senator Robert Singer defeated William Field by a 70%-30% margin. Field was endorsed by the Asbury Park Press. Assemblymen Dave Rible and Sean Kean similarly dominated in the 30th, over Lorelei Rouvaris and Jimmy Esposito.
In the municipal races to watch, Republicans gained ground in the Democratic stronghold of Red Bank where Cindy Burnham defeated incumbent Councilwoman Sharon Lee. Democratic incumbent Kathy Horgan defeated Sean DiSomma for the other council seat the borough. Burnham will be on the only Republican on the Red Bank Council when she is sworn in in January.
Republicans took control of the governing body in Eatontown, where Kevin Gonzalez and Richard Robinson defeated incumbent Democrats Jennifer Piazza and Meir Araman.
In Highlands, Mayor Frank Nolan, the sole Republican on the five member governing body, defeated Democratic Council President Rebecca Kane to retain his seat. Nolan was the last candidate elected as a Republican on the municipal level in Highlands as the borough’s voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum to hold non-partisan elections, starting in May of next year.
Republicans Michael Sachs and Scott Aagre beat back a challenge from Democrats Cliff Moore and Audrey Tyler to retain their seats on the Hazlet Township Committee. The Democrats retain control of the Hazlet governing body, 3-2.
In Aberdeen, the Democrats outspent Republicans $60,000 to $3,000 and narrowly retained the mayor’s chair and two council seats. Mayor Fred Tagliarini defeated Republican Gus Toomey III, 2,420 to 2,094. Democrats Margaret Montone and Joseph Martucci defeated Republicans Michael Vail and Edward Failia to retain total partisan control of the township.
In Marlboro, LaHornicca, the coalition of Democrats and former Republicans lead by Mayor Jon Hornik and Council President Frank LaRocca, beat back a spirited challenge by Republicans Craig Marshall, Robert Knight, and Marielania LaRosa. Former Republicans Jeff Cantor and Carol Mazzola, and Democrat Scott Metzger retain their seats on the council in a town that Governor Christie dominated. LaRocca said that Christie won every district in Marlboro by wide margins. The spread between Christie and Barbara Buono was 48% township wide, LaRocca said, compared to the Governor’s 43% margin of victory throughout Monmouth County.

With all due respect to you Jim, as well as our Freeholders, I doubt (the majority of) people in Monmouth County even know their Freeholders’ names.
Based on the VERY predictable outcomes in all of the races and the lack of Christie’s 2:1 advantage not impacting any races down ballot, I suspect that the fiefdoms that elect the incumbents are as strong and entrenched as ever and the charade of a democratic process that the voters can influence continues, unchanged, into the future.

Well, those that care obviously do know their names. And how you can call this a charade, is just outlandish.
If people want change, especially the Democrats, they should show up at the polls.
They & Republicans have the opportunity to do that at the primary level and at the general election level.
The feat of winning a freeholder election in Monmouth is not a great feat. Although happy with a conservative majority, winning is very easy in Monmouth County. The Rep. Voters are majority. If you had Joe Smith from unknown parts on the ballot he would win. Now. Cutting the outragous county police pensions and salaries and FULL retirement at age 48. Now thats a real success and feat which is kept hush.
Democrats won 2 seats in Union Beach and 2 seats in Spring Lake Heights, that shouldnt have happened….Was Paul Smith asleep? Dissapointed we didnt take Belmar seats.
