Sweeney says he’ll offer Christie new gas tax plans to end N.J. road work shutdown
TRENTON — Senate President Stephen Sweeney said Monday he will present multiple proposals to Gov. Chris Christie this week to re-up the Transportation Trust Fund and break a stalemate that’s suspended road and rail projects across the state. Sweeney (D-Gloucester), declined to elaborate on the funding plans, but acknowledged that timing is a concern as Republicans…
My guess still is that we wind up with a good 15 cents a gallon, and we’ll be expected to be grateful!! Boo, hiss, NJ legislature, for always raiding dedicated funds to inflate more social programs! A political pox on all your houses!
Starve the corrupt beast which has ballooned to 550,000 public employees, unsustainable pension and health care costs and driven seniors and businesses out of NJ with confiscatory property, income and estate and other taxes.
What you do not read anywhere is that the gas tax at $.37 cent (.$.14 + $.23) will take $2.1 billion out of the taxpayer pockets every year. The $2.1 billion proposed tax per year does not include tolls we already pay on parkway, turnpike and bridges.
The gas tax is projected to generate about $750 million this year, and a 23-cent increase would add another $1.4 billion a year. Jersey motorists living near state borders would have a little relief. Gas would still cost more in New York and Pennsylvania, but would be cheaper in Delaware.
This $2.1 billion hit to our pockets every year is the number the legislature and the media has decided to keep quiet. $2.1 billion every year can be rolled into nearly a $50 billion in bonds (to be pillaged, plundered and diverted to democrat strongholds).
1. Remember NJ still collects $750 million every year from the $.14 cent current tax.
2. NJ collects $500 million in Parkway tolls
3. NJ collects $1 billion in Turnpike tolls and an unknown amount on bridges
4. I would guess that additional billions in local and county property taxes are directed to roads, engineers and support.
So NJ collects right now $2.2 billion from gas taxes and tolls. We also pay billions in local and county property taxes for our streets through property taxes.
The $.23 cent gas plan would raise another $1.4 billion.
The minute the sales tax deal is agreed, the powerful democrats will create new bonds funded by the cash flow of the new tax to create a fund to pillage and plunger and redirect to their favorite projects (road and otherwise) and also use the funds for favored developer projects.
After this new tax is foisted on us, for years to come the local media and TV will point to the pot holes and horrible roads and say “Remember Governor Christie, you know the governor who brought us the highest gas tax increase in history – and got nothing for it.
The next thing the democrats will do is begin the campaign to raise sales taxes back to 7% or perhaps higher.
Raising the absurdly low $675K estate threshold to federal levels and the income tax credit to $100K income for seniors would keep our NJ residents and seasoned citizens who love the state from being forced out by income tax, confiscatory property taxes and stupid estate taxes (a deadly combination).
