Thompson will not seek another term as Middlesex GOP Chairman
State Senator Sam Thompson will not stand for reelection as Middlesex County Republican Chairman. Old Bridge Councilwoman Lucille Panos will seek the position, with Thompson’s support, when the County Committee convenes on June 14.
Thompson, the chairman since 2010, announced that he is stepping down at a Middlesex GOP fundraiser in Matawan on Tuesday evening.
The Republican senator from Old Bridge, 80, told MoreMonmouthMusings that he is not retiring. He is planning to seek reelection to the Senate in 2017.
A full time legislator, Thompson represented northern Monmouth County and Old Bridge in the state Assembly’s 13th district from 1998 through 2011. He was elected to the state Senate from the 12th district in 2011 after the decennial redistricting. The 12th district includes parts of Middlsex County, parts of western Monmouth County, parts of Ocean and Burlington Counties.
Actually, Sam is a full time state pension retiree, and supplements his pension income with his state legislator salary. Atta boy, Sammy!

despite the overwhelming Democratic registration of Middlesex, under his leadership the Republicans are fielding candidates, raising some money, winning a few seats, and throwing some well- attended events. Their women’s group is doing very well, and there is enthusiasm and effort at the grassroots level- am hopeful this positive record continues and grows.
