Senate President Steve Sweeney, a contender the 2017 Democratic gubernatorial nomination, is coming to Red Bank on December 17 as the headliner for a $175 per head fundraiser for Red Bank Councilmen Arthur Murphy’s and Michael Dupont’s reelection campaign.

The soiree is being hosted by Mayor Pat Menna and former Mayor Ed McKenna at Buona Sera.

The invitation includes a questionnaire to assure compliance with the borough’s “pay to play” ordinance.  Contractors that do business with the borough, developers and “Alcoholic Licensees” must disclose their attendance and in certain circumstances limit their campaign contributions to $400.

Who would have guessed that Red Bank issues licenses to alcoholics?

Having lost two council seats in two years, the Red Bank Democrats are off to an early start in the 2015 campaign.  Republican Municipal Chairman Sean DiSomma has his sights on defeating both Murphy and Dupont next November, and taking control of the borough’s governing body and water utility.

“It’s pretty clear how truly frightened the Democrats here in Red Bank are of losing there 25 year long corrupt reign of control,” DiSomma said. “In addition, I question why Senator Sweeney would stand next to and help raise money for characters of the ilk of Ed McKenna and Ed Zipprich.”

McKenna, for the former mayor and Zipprich a councilman and the Democratic Municipal Chairman, both DUI arrests from incidents on the Garden State Parkway. DiSomma, who lost to Zipprich last month, took the high road in his campaign and squashed the release of Zipprich’s arrest video.  DiSomma is signaling that the gloves will be off in 2015 with partisan control at stake.

DiSomma continued, “The question for Senator Sweeney is, does he want to raise money for those who’ve put lives in danger by driving drunk on the Garden State Parkway? Does he not have an ounce of decency or integrity? From my view, it seems like Senator Sweeney sees politics first which is shameful. My grandmother always told me that “when you lie with dogs you get fleas”. Senator Sweeney  will need to make a stop at the groomer before he leaves Red Bank.”
