Former Asbury Park Councilman Jim Keady is taking another shot at the Democrat nomination to challenge Congressman Chris Smith next year.
Keady lost the nomination to trespasser Josh Welle in 2018.
He announced his candidacy with two fundraising tweets yesterday that did not explicitly say he is running. He confirmed he is a candidate via text message and has registered with the FEC.
An unabashed Bernie Sanders supporter, Keady is running on a platform of Medicare for all, free college for all and the green new deal that would ban cow farts, gasoline and air conditioning.
Five other candidates have filed with the FEC as candidates for the CD-4 Democrat nomination.

New Jersey’s only Republican representative in Washington posted a strong fundraising result for the first quarter of the 2020 election cycle.
Congressman Chris Smith raised $236,494 in the quarter and has $212,194 cash on hand, New Jersey Globe reports. Since the 2018 election, Smith has raised $259,388.11.
In the first quarter of 2017 Smith raised $65,277.
Democrat Josh Welle spent $1.8 million trying to unseat Smith in 2018. Smith spent $1.5 million defending his 4th District seat and won by 12%.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— High school and college students from the Fourth Congressional District who are interested in attending a United States Service Academy are invited to Congressman Chris Smith’s Service Academy Information Night, to be held Thursday, April 18, 2019.
The event will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Naval Weapons Station Earle, 201 Highway 34 in Colts Neck, NJ. Congressman Chris Smith today announced that the $101.57 million in funding for projects scheduled at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst this year is safe from being diverted to fund the southern border security projects covered by President Donald Trump’s Emergency Declaration of February 15.
“These projects are not at risk,” Smith said after having been assured by the Department of Defense that awards for anticipated construction at the Joint Base are on schedule to be awarded in the current fiscal year. “Nothing at the Joint Base will be cut.”

In a podcast published last week, former congressional candidate Josh Welle said that if he runs for election again it will likely be for a national office and that it would likely be in 4-6 years.
Last December after he became the 20th Democrat to lose to Congressman Chris Smith, Welle told NJGlobe that he was considering a run for State Assembly in the 13th district to replace retiring Assemblywoman Amy Handlin.
Monmouth County Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger received the GOP endorsement for Handlin’s seat at a convention in Freehold yesterday. Democrats are set to endorse their candidates next Saturday. Josh Welle, the Virginia registered voter running against Congressman Chris Smith in the 4th Congressional District of New Jersey, applied to the Trump Administration’s first class of White House Fellows, MMM learned today. He was a finalist for the position, interviewed by the Commissioners of the program, but was not one of the fourteen fellows announced by the Trump White House on September 20, 2017 .
Welle filed to be a candidate for Congress on October 7, 2017, 17 days after the White House Fellows were announced without his name on the list.
During a candidates forum last February while competing for the Democrat nomination to challenge Congressman Chris Smith, Josh Welle told Democrat activists that his company, Severn Pacific, Inc., doing business as Crossdeck, was dissolved in the spring of 2017.
But an officer of Harvard Business Services, Severn Pacific’s Delaware business agent told Patch that Welle’s company submitted an address change on March 3, 2017 . The company, which Welle was the CEO of, then ignored multiple notices from HBS to pay its 2017 taxes. The company was finally dissolved last week, after MMM reported the $130,000 past due taxes.
