Tonight in New Jersey, children will go to bed hungry. Contrary to popular notions about hunger in America, most are not homeless. In fact, most New Jersey families that struggle to put food on the table live in households that have at least one working adult.
In Monmouth County, where I live, and in neighboring Ocean County, one in ten residents don’t know where their next meal will come from, let alone whether if it will be nutritious. One in seven of those ten are children. The anxiety and fear of not knowing is what social services agencies call “food insecurity.”
That is why I am beginning a new chapter in my life this week: leading the effort to end hunger in our community as Chief Executive Officer of Fulfill, formerly the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Fulfill aims to not only help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity today, but to provide them with the resources to become self-sufficient for tomorrow. I am excited join a team of 50 employees and 1,400 volunteers whose mission is to “shorten the line” of those in our communities who are hungry.

Aseemblywoman Serena DiMaso and Senator Declan O’Scanlon
With three weeks left in the summer tourist season Governor Phil Murphy finally signed legislation repealing the tax and surcharge of Jersey Shore short term summer rentals.
Monmouth County legislators Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso say Murphy’s action today is “too little, too late.”
“The Governor made the right call in repealing this short-term rental tax–and we acknowledge that–however it comes way too late,” said O’Scanlon. “We are in August at this point, summer is nearly over and most of the damage of this ill-conceived aspect of this tax has been done. The Governor and his policy folks need to recognize when something is emergent and do their homework up front, so they’re ready to take action the minute such bills land on his desk. This was a total failure of administrative planning and it likely, needlessly, cost the New Jersey economy millions of dollars.” Read the rest of this entry »

Congressman Chris Smith and Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger at the 2016 9/11 remembrance in Middletown
Congressman Chris Smith is running for 21st term in the House of Representatives next year and would be content to run another 4-5 times, according to a interview he had with NJGlobe.
“I’ve never been more enthusiastic about a job in my life,” Smith said. “I hope to have another decade here. I love it that much.”
Smith was responding to rumors that he would retire in 2020. In 2018, MoveOn.Org had a fundraising campaign based upon their lie that the Dean of the New Jersey delegation was retiring.
“It’s a type of smear,” Smith told NJGlobe of the retirement rumors. “It’s factually untrue. It’s unethical.”

By Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone
Happy August, Monmouth County! It’s hard to believe we are just a few, short weeks away from Labor Day! Soon children will be heading back to school and the cooler weather will be here. However, let’s forget about all of that now and just enjoy the remainder of this great summer season!
The Monmouth County Division of Economic Development has been hard at work this summer connecting with local members of the County’s agriculture industry, sharing with them information about Grown in Monmouth. Last week, we held our first-ever Grown in Monmouth Restaurant Week, which I am proud to say was a tremendous success. We had over 50 restaurants participate, who featured at least one dish that was made with ingredients that have been grown in Monmouth County. Read the rest of this entry »

Bill would create a commission to review heat stroke exertion risk to student athletes
Continuing his career long practice of writing legislation that arises from constituent service, Congressman Chris Smith introduced a bill in the House of Representatives on Friday named for Braedon Bradford, the 19 year old Neptune Township football player who died of exertional heat stroke on August 2, 2018 at Garden City Community College in Kansas where he was a freshman scholarship player. For those who didn’t lose power, or see the fury of Monday night’s storm, be thankful. Your lives went on like a normal summer day with a thunderstorm in the background. For those who were in the micro-bursts…it was the scariest thing many have seen since Sandy..and more than many of us have ever seen. It lasted 20 minutes through the area…but left more immediate wind devastation than Sandy. Sandy spent hours piling water into our Bayshore and bays and oceanfront. This unnamed…moment…tore down trees and utility poles and the wires near, or attached to, them. And it was block-by-block, neighborhood by neighborhood. Which made it even harder on those without power. Many neighbors had no inconvenience at all. I can say now, it was a miracle no one was seriously injured or killed. For those that didn’t see it, trust me, this isn’t hyperbole.
In the end over 200,000 people had no power. Trees were down. JCP&L on the scramble, tested again. By Thursday night, all but just over 200 customers in Monmouth County had their power restored.
