The Middletown Township Committee blew through the Corzine 4% property tax cap, with the approval of the Department of Community Affairs, passing a budget that increased municpal spending by 4.5% and increased the tax levy for muncipal purposes by 13.4%.  The budget was passed on Tuesday night, according to the Asbury Park Press.

During an interview with MoreMonmouthMusings in July, Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger outlined the budgetary challenges the committee faced this year, i.e., $1million more than expected in snow removal, the unused sick time and vacation time being paid to early retirees and the loss of state funding.   He argued that Middletown is the victim of its own efficiencies with so little the cut and spoke hopefully of Governor Christie’s proposed “tool kit” that would untie municipal leaders hands in reducing mandated costs and employee policies. Democratic Committee member Sean Byrnes was the lone vote against the budget, saying the committee should have taken a “hardline” with the municipal unions and cut back drastically on recreation spending, according to the APP account of the Tuesday meeting.

Scharfenberger and Byrnes are facing each other in this November’s election, as both of their terms are expiring.  Scharfenberger and his running mate Kevin Settembrino are hoping to return the governing body to 5-0 GOP control. Byrnes and his running mate Mary Mahoney hope to maintain or expand the Democratic participation on the committee.

But then they woke up.  They realized the change they were getting was not the change they wanted.  The majority of this country was not mad at George Bush for being too conservative.  They were mad at him because they bought into media canard that he lied to us, they were mad because of mismanagement but most of all they were mad because he was not conservative enough.  They were mad with Republicans for the same reasons they had become corrupted by the system.  They were no longer viewed as agents of reform but as part of the problem. They were not too conservative.  They were not conservative enough. 

So, they either stayed home on Election Day or decided to give the other guys (the ones promising change) a shot.  Then they saw the change they were getting was not what they wanted.

The Majority of Americans suddenly realized they do not want European type government.  They do not want the government taking care of them from cradle to grave. They realize it is not the government’s job to supply them with housing and medical care and jobs.  They don’t want the government to redistribute their money. They don’t want earmarks even for their own communities.  They don’t want their way of life destroyed by an extreme environmental policy.  They just want the Government to get the hell out of their way.  They woke up.
