Congressman Steny Hoyer, the #2 Democrat in the House of Representatives behind Nancy Pelosi, will be in New York City on Thursday to raise campaign cash for Josh Welle, the Democrat running against Congressman Chris Smith in the 4th congressional district of New Jersey, according to an invitation to the fundraiser obtained by MMM.

Hoyer entered the House in 1981, the same year as Smith.

79 years old, Hoyer started his political career as a staffer for U.S. Senator Daniel Brewster from 1962 through 1966.  Pelosi was also on Brewster’s staff at the time.   In 1966, Hoyer was elected to the Maryland State Senate. He became President of the Maryland Senate in 1975.  He sought the Democrat nomination for Maryland Lt. Governor in 1978. He lost, but got an appointment to the Maryland Board of Higher Education as a consolation prize.  He served on that board until he was elected to Congress in a special election on May 19, 1981.

Welle says he’s running against Smith because he is a career politician who has been in Washington too long.

  1. Steny Hoyer said at 2:56 pm on August 11th, 2018:

Is part of the swamp and he’s looking to recruit a new member. And he’s next in line if they throw Pelosi overboard.

There is hardly anyone who is as “career” a career politician as Chris Smith, you know, the one who lives in Virginia.

  3. @ Ira said at 9:36 pm on August 11th, 2018:

You mean Chris Smith who delivers for NJ?

  4. Like most of them said at 10:05 pm on August 11th, 2018:

don’t stay in DC much of the time, while working there! Stop. Is that all you’ve got? Good, they are spending in Chris’ district: waste of money. Very few have accomplished as much as Smith has!

  5. Stop it Ira said at 8:23 am on August 12th, 2018:

Chris Smith being a career politician is not a negative thing.

  6. As always, said at 8:59 am on August 12th, 2018:

everyone needs to be measured by performance in office, however long they have been there: if you stacked up all the positive, real accomplishments of a Chris Smith, vs that of, say, a Pallone, it would stun you, how very different that is!

About Hoyer raising money for Welle?

Welle’s supporters are screaming that Congressman Chris Smith has been in office too long.

Hoyer has been in office since 1981. So has Chris Smith who was elected the same year.

So I guess that you are entitled to serve that long only if you are a Democrat????

BTW, Hoyer is some 14 years OLDER than Chris Smith. So, who’s been around too long?

Please, spare us the hypocrisy from the Democrat Snowflakes in CD4

More hypocrisy about Steny Hoyer and his support for Welle.

The CD4 hate group District 4 Coalition for Change screams bloody murder about town halls yet Steny Hoyer RARELY does a town hall and his last one was a telephone town hall. Last live town hall I found was years ago

I wonder if Hoyer too was asked pre- screened questions during the phone call. 🙂
