Handlin Calls For Probe Of Community Colleges Spending and Perks

STUDENTS AND TAXPAYERS DESERVE ASSURANCE THAT THEIR

TUITION AND TAX DOLLARS ARE USED PROPERTY

Concerned that recent scandals at county colleges in Monmouth and Gloucester counties could be representative of a larger problem, Assemblywoman Amy H. Handlin today asked State Comptroller Matt Boxer to look into the contractual perks and spending habits of county college presidents throughout New Jersey.

The presidents of Brookdale Community and Gloucester County colleges have recently resigned amid accusations of fiscal impropriety that have triggered criminal investigations.

In the letter, Handlin wrote:

Dear Comptroller Boxer:

Two presidents of New Jersey’s county colleges have recently resigned amid accusations of fiscal impropriety that have triggered criminal investigations.

While I hope these are isolated examples, I cannot have faith that these issues are unique to Monmouth and Gloucester counties given the propensity for waste and abuse in New Jersey’s public agencies and institutions.

New Jersey’s county colleges are an important asset for the future of our state. Students and taxpayers deserve assurance that their tuition and tax dollars are handled responsibly, effectively and ethically at these public institutions, especially during trying economic times when personal finances and state revenues are so severely strained.

Your office has produced tremendous results for the public exposing wasteful and abusive spending in New Jersey. Therefore, I respectfully request that you review the contracts, perks and spending policies of county college presidents so the public knows whether the scandals at Brookdale Community and Gloucester County colleges are mere coincidence or representative of a statewide epidemic.

I hope my concerns are misplaced and that your office finds efficiently-run county colleges. If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach me at my office: (732) 787-1170.

Art – apparently they do pay attention to MMM.

Here’s what my comment was on this subject (Settle the Burnham case) at 4:27 pm on April 16th, 2011:

“Let’s find out about the salaries and perks granted to every College/University President before we hang just this Board.”

Looks like taxpayers must thank both Freeholder Curley and Assemblywoman Handlin for being our representatives.

The bullshit is flying now. Handlin was on the Freeholder Board when Burnham got most of his rich contracts, and her cronies, Birdsall and Elkes had direct oversight of Burnham.

For one with such a sterling anti-corruption reputation, it is amazing how much corruption has gone on right under her nose. Bid-Rig, Burnham, what else is there?

Handlin is part of the problem. God help us if we are looking to this liberal, RINO for leadership.

She should also look at the perks the state university presidents receive starting with Rutgers.

Why would she omit these presidents? Part of the answer is the people would be shocked at what these university presidents receive.

Let me say this. I disagree with Amy Handlin on a lot of issues but her bonafides as a corruption fighter are the real deal.
For years on the Freeholder board she was reviled and things were hidden from her.

like I said I disagree with her about a lot of social issues but I will give her credit where credit is due.

What credit. She was there when bid rig was taken place at the county level and chose to do nothing and remained silent. And, this idea to review perks at other colleges was not her idea. She jumped on the band wagon because she came out hibernation and saw it was time for re-election.

    Ted,
    Can you read?
I said when she was a Freeholder the other county Pols hated her and kept her out of the loop. She did not do nothing and remain silent. She opposed them as best she could and was villified for it.

Any reforms she tried to introduce were squashed.
