Monmouth Legislators: No more Ebola Patients at Fort Monmouth

Fort MonmouthThe legislators representing Monmouth County from the 11th and 13th Districts want the New Jersey Department of Human Services to stop housing asymptomatic Ebola patients at Fort Monmouth at then end of this month when the current agreement to do so expires and they are calling on the members of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority to reject DHS’s request to extend the arrangement.

Senators Joe Kyrillos and Jennifer Beck joined with Assembly Members Amy Handlin, Declan O’Scanlon, Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande in issuing the following statement:

“As legislators representing Fort Monmouth and the surrounding communities, we do not feel it is appropriate to house possible asymptomatic Ebola patients at the Fort Monmouth site. The Governor has designated three hospitals in New Jersey as primary treatment facilities: University Hospital , Hackensack University Medical Center , and Robert WoodJohnson University Hospital . Fort Monmouth has no medical support services on site, so any symptomatic patient would have to travel off-site to a hospital. We do not believe that the appropriate medical care exists at the Fort Monmouth facility to house these patients, and we urge the Board of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority to reject the Department of Human Services request to use Fort Monmouth as a quarantine site.”

    Glad to see everyone trying to get out in front of this. Never made sense in the first place to quarantine people on a piece of property which is part of the largest redevelopment project in New Jersey (never mind thinking they would get a way with keeping it secret from local residents.)

    Only things that I would add is that it is my understanding that FMERA was basically told they did not have a say in the matter last time. So I would suggest that the legislatures fire needs to be directed towards Trenton/DHS where the request to extend the use would originate.

    I would also suggest that FMERA (which supposed to be watching out for the interests of local residents) should retain a non conflicted outside legal counsel for issues like this rather than having to rely on the Asst. A.G. which is clearly conflicted and is essentially representing both parties in the matter, DHS/State and FMERA/State.
