Water Rates Poised To Double in Marlboro
Barbara Levine, Marlboro
I am writing because I am concerned about a proposed double digit increase in the Marlboro Water Utility Division’s rates. When the mayor and Township Council decided to assume the Marlboro Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MTMUA) as part of the township two years ago, we were promised it would reduce taxpayer and ratepayers’ expenses.
At the time is was reported that the savings to the taxpayers for eliminating this layer of government would be more than $800,000 in the first year and $200,000 per year thereafter and that the takeover would not affect the rates. Yet now, barely two years later, a rate increase is proposed.
We were told the MTMUA was tapping into capital reserves to pay current operating expenses and that absorption (of the authority by the township) would reduce costs so those reserve funds could be used for repairs and upgrades. There were many dissenters at the time and even those who were worried that this would be a “onetime gimmick” and that the Water Utility Division would initially raise rates and then be sold off.
In fact, the question was posed to the mayor and council with a request for a resolution to promise not to sell the water (utility) so that Marlboro does not go the way of other towns who have assumed a water authority with disastrous results, i.e., Howell, which has one of the highest water rates in the state.
Mayor and council, can you provide some assurance that this proposed water increase will not occur, and that you will not sell the water (utility) as long as you are mayor of this town?
Ok, well took a look at Data Universe on the App.com web site. The Marlboro Police are making alot of money. Lets start by saying that I support Police/Fireman and they are a very important part of society and I respect them, BUT, I think they are overpaid, retire with Cadillac pension and healthcare plans for themselves, wife and kids and way too young. I blame the politicians being in bed with the police unions and society letting the unions get way too much power. The statement of being in a public sector job and being a “public servant” and sacrficing pay for job security and benfits and all that is just completely false. You have a 15% rate of REAL unemployment in NJ and we have allowed police in Marlboro and other towns to get payed $120,000 and up PLUS benefits for sgts, captians etc etc. This is not conservative fiscal responsibility. This is kicking the can down the road and dealing with debt in the future. Monmouth County residents are drowning in taxes and mosts town are near bankrupt and the state of NJ is near bankrutpcy and we think that having to pay these types of huge salaries are fair? And you call yourself a Republican if you agree with this Mr./Ms. politician? And, the other MAJOR problem is that these police are able to retire in their 40’s or early 50’s and collect huge pensions for life? I dont blame the police but I do blame the overly powerful unions and politicians that have failed us taxpayers yet again by giving in to the unions. Christie has been the only person to act financially responsible and he has a huge way to go. in 2012, you can now make more money (including pension)as a sr. police officer than an engineer, or physican or pharmacist ? yes you can ! The policians need to do more. They need to get off of the fundraising circuit 5 nights a week and show the taxpayers they are not just typical do nothing politicians and are more interested in just getting re-elected. So, you want to know why Marlboro residents are drowning in taxes and water bills? Take a look:
