Is bullet voting Un-American?

In last year’s municipal election in Neptune Township, Republican candidate for township committee Warren Lapp did not have a running mate.  He publicly encouraged voters to cast a “bullet vote” just for him, even though there were two committee seats open with candidates on the ballot.

The Neptune Democrats responded by calling Lapp un-American for suggesting such a thing.

Now Neptune Matters, the Republican leaning blog from the township is calling on Neptune Democrats Randy Bishop and Eric Houghteling to denounce Dan Jacobson, the 11th district Independent candidate for Assembly for asking voters to bullet vote for him.  Neptune Matters says that Bishop and Houghteling should call Jacobson un-American, but that they won’t because a bullet vote for Jacobson helps the Democratic candidates in the 11th.

Actually Mr. Gallagher, we are sick of BOTH parties in Neptune; preferring us to be put into the Conservative column, almost Libertarian at times 🙂 🙂

  2. Rick Ambrosia said at 7:00 pm on September 23rd, 2011:

Funny…that’s what I will be asking for here in Colts Neck. Why should you have to vote for two people? Isn’t this still America where you get to vote for whomever you would like?

  3. Sancho Panza said at 7:08 pm on September 23rd, 2011:

Would it be possible to vote for a candidate twice? For example, could I pull the lever next to his name AND also write-in his name? Assuming I had to “vote for two,” would the guy I voted for get 2 votes from me, a single voter?

  4. ArtGallagher said at 7:10 pm on September 23rd, 2011:

    Sancho,

That, would be un-American, except in Chicago and Hudson County

Man, MMM is fun on a rainy Friday night. I’m with Mike Golub — I think on the issue of bullet voting, Warren Lapp is a great American. How dare Randy Bishop question the patriotism of a bullet voter? It’s outrages like these which led me to quit the Democratic Party. No voter should be denied his bullet voting franchise. Golub is right. Bishop is wrong. Let Randy come after me on this issue. I dare him to question my patriotisim on the issue of bullet voting.

    Dan,

We normally don’t allow comments from candidates on our blog, but JUST this once; we would welcome the above comment

    🙂

Excellent idea, Jack Black! Cut and paste my comment from this site and put it on your blog under the headline: “Jacobson dares Bishop to question his patriotism on bullet voting issue”.

In the meantime, please extend my heartfelt thanks to Mike Golub for his continued vigilance against the McCarthyism that pervades the Neptune Democratic Party. Randy Bishop may look like a long-haired radical, but he is indeed a extreme right-wing reactionary who’d curtail our civil liberties — in the name of fighting those he slurs as “un-American”. Tell you what: Bishop is Joseph McCarthy all over again. Thank God Mike Golub — Neptune’s own Edward R. Murrow — is there to stop him.

  10. Michael S. Golub said at 11:33 pm on September 23rd, 2011:

Mr. Jocobson, I would gladly accept your praise and compliments, but to be truthful you’re unfortunately mis-characterizing and identifying me as being Jack Black and or Neptune Matters. I am neither and have never once even remotely indicated as such! The first rule of Golubism is be open, transparent and never be afraid and shy away from putting your name on what you say, and say what you feel. Words do definitely mean things and a name attached afterwards, burnished with honest and sincere service to one’s community, can often say so much more. I have spent my life working toward being appreciative and worthy of my blessings, and comfortable with who and what I am! Not a politician, but rather a devoutly consistent volunteer. I do not “attack” Neptune Democrats because of their political affiliation. I confront people who spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars, we do not have, on office furniture we didn’t need. I confront people who provide total waivers and exceptions from NJ State Environmental Land Use Law, on property that is enviro-sensitive. I confront people who run for office with over 90% of their campaign financial resources coming from labor unions whom they then invite into private closed door meetings at town hall to assist them in writing ordinances that govern and regulate public bidding processes. I confront people who refuse to even consider renaming a public park, specified for passive recreation, to honor the only active duty soldier to sacrifice his life in the war on terror. I appreciate the fact that at least you attach your own name to your comments. You have at least that little going for you! My distane for these people currently in office in Neptune is less about their ideology and more about their arrogance and ignorance. Politically their all small potatoes, but they can (have) done a lot of damage to the public trust and the have turned traditionally non-political positions in government into the infrastructure of incumbent preservation. They’ve even won over a few formerly influential Republicans, by providing stipends, appointments and contracts. I don’t think we can really blame that on a bad economy, rather a troubled value system and a bit of greed. I don’t think I want to say too much more. These folks get upset and offended when others start telling facts as opposed to spin. They do for the reputation of public service what Jack the Ripper did for the door to door salesman, maybe worst!

Well done, Jack Black. Well done. Together we will roust that reactionary Randy Bishop from his pseudo-radical redoubt on the Neptune Township Committee.

And to Mike Golub, I apologize for indeed forgetting a central tenet of Golubism: Putting your name on your public comments. We are indeed compatriots in that regard.

Gentlemen, the bottom line is this:

From Democrat Rick Ambrosia of Colts Neck in the west to Republican Warren Lapp of Neptune in the east, bullet voters of the new 11th District UNITE! You have nothing to lose but the elections in which we are all such obvious underdogs.

In other words, I look forward to the bullet votes this November of Ambrosia, Lapp and Jack Black. Now if I can only get Golub to Join the Revolution.

    Dan Jacobson

Neptune – Where Democrats are Democrats and so are Republicans.

Randy Bishop is an honest straight shooter who I’ve personally witnessed protect the constitutional rights of people who the Neptune Republicans trampled upon.

Randy Bishop is conservative in action, not in name only like the Neptune Republicans.

Office furniture? The biggest know agains him is office furniture? Reminds me of when the Democrats attacked Nancy Reagan when she spruced up the White House which had fallen in disrepair.

Go complain in a broken chair.

  13. Jerryw45 said at 9:51 am on September 24th, 2011:

    Oh Tommy Justified,

You have no idea how wrong you are about Bishop being conservative.

  14. TR said at 2:22 pm on September 25th, 2011:

There goes Tommy’s slim chance of a career in Republican politics. He just forgot the cardinal rule. If you can’t say something bad about the opposition don’t say anything at all.

As far as bullet voting being un-American, what a bunch of horse hooey. Thats just deperate democrat doublespeak. If you don’t vote because you are lazy or uninformed thats un-American but not voting because all the candidates stink is as American as apple pie.

  15. Freespeaker1976 said at 8:27 pm on September 25th, 2011:

    Hey Tommy,

If things are that bad in Neptune Republican Politics, why do you always chastise from a distance in Howell?

I mean, if it’s that important to you; why don’t you move there and try and fix things. The word is that Republicans keep going nowhere in Neptune and they could use a person good at telling people how things should be.

  16. Michael S. Golub said at 9:46 pm on September 25th, 2011:

Tommy is a very good man and I consider him a friend! He is unfortunately still a bit sore around the edges because of the methodology employed by the Catley- Beekman machine in identifying his family’s business property on Route 35, near the North Channel of the Shark River, “in need of redevelopment” back in 2004-05. Of course the Democrats who took office in 2006 by in part, using that volatile issue strategically and divisively to exploit a riff in the party. I accept my responsibility in that flawed process, but was truthfully unaware of it’s formulation, until the time of the public hearing. I would expect a person as accomplished in political strategy and inner-personal skills to know when he is being smoked by an opportunist or two. So I know full well that Tommy knows and believes that I’m telling the truth, even if he won’t admit it. The problem in Neptune has gone far beyond buying furniture, evidenced by the few other things I already mentioned, and the dozen or so I did not, because of the lack of time and patience on my part to explain the finer points of how attractive packaging and smooth rhetoric in Neptune (not to mention impressive (oppressive) labor union support) now trumps serious content and substantive platform positions & vision. Tommy likes Randy & Co. for the very same reason that so many uninformed residents in Neptune repeatedly vote for the Bishop express, because he makes them feel good for the moment and often positions himself outside of a conflict he externally & deliberately first creates. If anyone REALLY thinks that Randy & Co. are the answer to what plagues Neptune, then they didn’t understand the question correctly, or are just merely looking no further than their own micro-issue. In any case, it appears that some of us are not staying tuned in to what is going on in the soul and heart of this country, the day of the warm “political” fuzzy IS OVER. The clouds are about to break and the conservative sun is about to dry up and evaporate the liberal soaking that we got in 2008. People want to be shown what they want to see, not only told what they want to hear. Hear in Neptune too. The economy turned sour in 2006, other wise be assured that the plan would have most probably continued to move forward. In all honesty your issue is with the Neptune EDC and Mr. B. Even being more truthfull, Mr. Phil is harmless. If Mike B.stops short in the hallway Philly would run right into him. It’s sad and depressing. It feels so refreshing to tell the truth. My Dearest Tommy, Please pass that on to your friends Randy & Co. Be well and my best to the family!!! If you want to anger a conservative, tell him (or her) a lie! If you want to anger a liberal, tell him (or her) the truth! Credit for that goes to Rush.

  17. Justified Right said at 1:04 am on September 26th, 2011:

I’ve never before seen the Bill of Rights referred to as a “micro-issue.”

But I appreciate the statement that you were unaware of the process used by Neptune Republicans to begin Eminent Domain processes to take our family business.

Thank you for that. That helps heal.

I wish you would have listened to me at the time you spoke out in favor of it. It would have saved us $40,000 in lawyers fees fighting to have the vote overturned.

I certainly wish we had that back.

  18. Michael S. Golub said at 10:06 am on September 26th, 2011:

The bill of rights is not a micro-issue. I have a keen sense of the obvious! However, this particular situation as it relates to the overall scope of concerns and challenges in Neptune is! $40K is most certainly a sizable amount of money. I meant not (and will never mean) to diminish the pain, anguish and suffering (unknown to me at that time) your wonderful family experienced, specifically as a result of that insensitive process. My primary regret (as a former elected official) is not confirming that your family was on board prior to the township hearing and meetings, that you often attended. Quite frankly I’m still in favor of the basic concept, and I have stated before, the businesses located on that uniquely situated strip of property may one day regret the fact they didn’t take advantage of that moment in time. That remains to be seen. The potential conveyance of any of those properties will be a very expensive endeavor and complex set of circumstances, without help from the State of NJ. because the grounds are not that clean, no fault of anyone intentionally, it goes with the territory of the type of activity conducted on all those individual sites. I made a costly and careless mistake out of innocent ignorance and naivete. I think you’re supporting Randy & Co. out of a bit of spiteful vindictiveness. I’m a big boy and I’ve been hit by other people I intensely and profoundly respect before. In my opinion this process is not really healing anything for you, it is keeping the wound just shy from complete closure. Then again that is exclusively your choice my friend. When the dust settles and the smoke finally clears I hope we can either still or once again be able to feel that we are mutual friends. Again, your a VERY good man, with a good mind and strong moral compass. I hold you in as high regard as ever! The restoration of confidence and preservation of faith is what true friendship is all about! Be well!
