Beck, O’Scanlon and Casagrande Voice Opposition To Toll Hikes
12th District Legislators Senator Jennifer Beck, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon and Caroline Casagrande today announced their opposition to the massive toll hikes proposed by the Port Authority.
“With so many of our own residents here in New Jersey unemployed, adding another undue burden, a 150% toll hike on working families is not the right course of action,” Beck said. “This is another battle in the fight for our State to remain an affordable place for our families. New Jersey has already lost residents who’ve left the State for more affordable places to live and another toll increase is counter-productive to New Jersey’s economic recovery.”
“Senator Beck, Assemblywoman Casagrande and I completely oppose these massive toll hikes, and we support Governors Christie and Cuomo in their efforts to derail them,” said O’Scanlon. “To nearly double the tolls and PATH fares in a time of economic difficulty makes no sense. This will be one more barrier to economic activity in the tri-state area, and a tax increase on people who already having a hard time making ends meet.”
The Port Authority is holding several hearings today at 8am and 6pm, often in difficult to reach places. Casagrande said that was not a coincidence.
“We saw the same thing for the Corzine toll hikes on the Parkway and Turnpike. They hold the hearings at a time when the very people who would be affected by this – commuters – are on their way to or from work so they can’t attend. They’re not interested in hearing or considering the public’s opinion, because if they did, their ears would be burning. This is an outrageous burden to put on people who have to drive into the city or to visit loved ones in the New York area.”
reading this, and listening to 101.5 this morning where i heard of the citizens of towns who voted DOWN their school budget, only to have that budget PASSED anyway—and then had their taxes RAISED to pay for the budget they rejected.
whaaaa????
How do we change this??? ELECTIONS. Get out there and be sure we put the right people in charge of the store (budget/checkbook). People like these 3 ladies…like John, Lillian, & Gary….Rosemarie Peters…—-and the new “teaparty-minded” candidates like Shane, Marcia & Jordan….
If there was ever a year to work our fannies off on some campaign or another this is it.
Look around folks: somewhere near you someone is already killing him/herself to run a terrific campaign. Pick one, and let’s get the job done—-get Christie the team he needs to change the above.
Otherwise the rest of us are going to have to pick up our petticoats also and move out of New Jersey for a place we can afford to live.
Sorry for the rant. The keyword : ELECTIONS ELECTIONS ELECTIONS. Or we’re sunk.
So Beck, Casagrande, and O’Scanlon oppose “massive” toll hikes. I guess there for some sort of hike–but not “massive;” Whatever that means.
Could they explain what they are for then?? It’s a no brainer that the governor will argue for a lesser toll hike–and receive it. This in turn will make him and Cuomo look like saviors to the taxpayers. It’s a done deal with the Port Authority–the fares will be going up, but by how much remains the question. The speculation has it the tolls will rise by $2.00. Half of what the PA wants; but what the PA wanted all along.
As for the governor saying no–don’t bet on it. When the Delaware River Port Authority and New Jersey Highway Authority requested toll hikes–they received it. If the past portends the future–get ready to crack that wallet open.
And Lois, you are correct: “Elections” is the keyword.
Oh Lois,
Regarding defeated school budgets: The taxpayers of the Freehold Regional High School District–a district composed of 9 municipalities, overwhelmingly voted to defeat their budget two years ago. This was during the time when Jim Gearheart of 101.5 urged citizens throughout the state to defeat their budgets.
Just to let you know, our “represenative” Jennifer Beck, went to Department of Education officials in Trenton requesting they lessen the cuts demanded and expected by the taxpayers.
You are so correct about elections–especially the upcoming elections.

Yawn, Jim Sage, yawn.
Your one-man vendetta against Jen Beck is getting so tiresome. Give it a rest. Please. Trust me, Nobody cares.
Get a life.
Nothing was more ignorant than Jim Gearheart, the Governror and anyone else teling people to vote against school budgets that they themselves do not know the first thing about.
In the weeks before a school budget election, every district has at least one public meeting/hearing that people can attend to learn about their local budget and to ask any questions they have. At that point a resident of a local town can at least make an informed decision as to whether their districts budget is responsible or not.
Urging people to vote agaisnt all school budgets (or voting against a budget site unseen) is just as asinine as anyone who urged people to vote for all budgets.
Regarding toll hikes on the roads, why not just raise the gasoline tax since all drivers than share equally in the burden not just those who need to use/live near toll roads??
Any toll increase is a tax increase. Governor, keep your promise. Don’t increase tolls at all.
Jim made a good observation. If Beck et al don’t want massive toll hikes, what kind of hikes are they looking for? It’s still a tax as far as I am concerned. Listening to 101.5, Gearhart played a voice recording of Christie discussing the hikes. He sounded like a man that wanted to look good about this and will probably halve the toll increase. Is that what Beck et al are looking for?? Not massive, but a toll (tax) hike nonetheless.
Beck has lost my vote. Her flip-flopping that Art has written about in the past about the gay marriage and her voting for the Woman’s Healthcare issue really turned me off to her.
Caroline and Declan are well liked, but we know who pulls the ring around their respective noses. Good thing Declan doesn’t have Jennifer anymore. Caroline–keep your distance.
Jim–keep up the good work. Hope to see you soon.
Declan–keep up the good work. Your working now with Joe K. Good team in the making.
Yawn–Wake the hell up and smell the coffee.
Jim Sage, hang in there and remember (as my father used to say) “No one ever kicks a dead dog” !
Lois, how exactly are more “elections” going to change anything ? As the Who would say: “meet the new boss, same as the old boss, we won’t get fooled again.” Or will we ? Did someone mention Lillian ?
