Freeholder Candidate Selection

By Art Gallagher

The Monmouth County GOP selection committee will meet next Saturday the 26th to nominate a candidate for Freeholder.  The winning candidate will be Freeholder Lillian Burry’s running mate and will seek to unseat Democratic Freeholder Amy Mallet in the November election.  Assuming, of course, that there is no primary challenge.

Like Burry, incumbent Surrogate Rosemarie Peters and the entire Monmouth County legislative delegation are expected to be nominated by acclamation.

The four candidates vying for the Freeholder nomination are Manalapan Mayor Andrew Lucas, Wall Committeeman George Newberry, Howell Mayor Bob Walsh and Spring Lake Councilman Gary Rich.   All four gentlemen have bee touring the county meeting with Republican Clubs and Tea Party Groups.  Each candidate and their supporters are working the phones to pick up votes of the municipal chairs and elected officials, past and present, who comprise the selection committee.

Its 11;18 on a Sunday Night and Gary has a huge lead.

Tommorrow morning supporters of the other candidates will wake up and hear about this and there will be a mad dash to get on the site and have supporters vote for the other candidates. Arts numbers will go through the roof!

Art you are a marketing super genius

Out of curiosity, I missed the debate–I was at the first one, but it was cancelled.

Did any of the candidates bring up the two big fraud situations currently percolating in the county–such as the pension fraud in the sheriff’s department and the fraud going on in Brookdale CC–just wondering, since these are two costly situations for the taxpayers.

With polls like this, who needs County Committee People!

  7. with polls like this, said at 8:28 pm on March 21st, 2011:

we’ll forget about the bigger prize: nominating the two strongest, vote-getting candidates, and electing BOTH Freeholders in Nov., not nominating somebody to “get back” at any person or town.. focus, people..

  8. CommonSense said at 9:33 pm on March 21st, 2011:

Lillian Burry and Rosemarie Peters are 2 very strong candidates. We cannot afford a weak candidate like Newberry or Walsh. The best bet for the County ticket is either Lucas or Rich. I’d prefer Lucas, but if it isn’t him, I would go with Rich.

  9. oh, great, said at 6:46 am on March 22nd, 2011:

in a year when people are hurting and simply HATE anybody who gets any kind of a break, let’s go ahead and put a on guy who’s lost once before, raised taxes in his own town, and receives a farmland assessment on his property!.. way to lose again.. can anyone remember how we got beck as a Senator?.. yup, ol’ Karcher’s 10 Christmas trees that got her the farmland assessment in Marlboro.. STOP!

  10. how can you say said at 6:52 am on March 22nd, 2011:

Newbery is “weak”, when his town can consistently be counted on, to turn out in big numbers for the GOP, especially in one like this, when turnout is traditionally low?.. we need strong bases, and every vote, this year, last year was an anti-Obama sweep-it will not be so, this year….here’s a strong, decent man who’s done the right thing his whole life, and gets it, and will do the right thing in tough times for his county.. Go, George!

  11. JerryW45 said at 8:16 am on March 22nd, 2011:

    “How Can You Say,”

Newberry is seen as weak because he comes across as a frumpy, policy wonkish guy.

In the three times I have met him he has failed to impress me with any bold leadership style. He’s a decent guy that has done the right thing his whole life, yes; but strong is not how I would characterize him.

I want a bold guy that will keep going after the prize time and time again, like Gary Rich has done.

Forget this strong base pablum of Wall Twp votes rhetoric. Wall is a Republican stronghold. You think for a moment that if George is NOT the candidate, Wall Township will vote for a Democrat?

Get serious. But, that said; my vote as a County Committee person doesn’t matter. Enough County Chairs will fall in line with Party Boss Joe Oxley’s arm twisting that Newberry might very well get the nod.

AND THEN enough MIDDLETOWN votes might go Sean Byrne’s way when Frumpy Ole George can’t challenge Byrne.

Nothing personal, just the facts as this voter sees it.

  12. Jeff Hein said at 2:46 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

I am blown away with how competitive this poll is.

  13. nothing personal here said at 3:42 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

either, Jerry, I really hope you get to know Mr. Newberry better, the last thing I’d characterize him as would be wonkish or frumpy: he’s funny, warm, a total gentleman, respectful of all views, and I’d even go as far to say that he may wind up being the “next” Ted Narozanick in dedication and perseverance, in taking the time to listen to all, consider all actions, then decisively move, at the proper moment..and, dare I say, will be a great personality-balance on that Board, being not as “out-front,” does not mean “not smart!”…. just out of curiosity, what decisive accomplishments has Rich done in Spring Lake?. have seen nothing fom him, and gleaned nothing new, from his library appearance.. also, his own colleagues and chair from there, are noticeably absent from his campaign, while two of the other three, at least, have their “home-teams” out there, cheering them on, as Arnone did last year.. and, Jeff, remember, people are voting more than once for “their “guys on here, and if you add these all up, it’s way beyond the possible actual number of voters on Saturday!….

  14. Hey, Jerry, said at 3:54 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

my money will still be on Newberry: Sean Byrnes is a typical, whiny, elitist, lib lawyer, who has already achieved the distinction of losing on two levels, at such a young age: and, do not forget that Rosemarie Peters, a popular and much-longer elected official, from Middletown, is at the top of the county ballot in 2011, and will help bring in a good tally for all 3 of our county candidates: she’s done a great job as surrogate, and will even help “drag in” the two freeholders, too.. let not your heart be troubled, Peters, Burry and Newberry will all do well, being from 3 good Rep.-turnout towns,in both their debates and running on their good accomplishments and experience!….

  15. JerryW45 said at 6:01 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

    Nothing Personal Here,

I don’t have to know George “better.” I am relying on others I know very well and I trust, others who know him from school days.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying George is a bad guy. He’s just not MY guy because I don’t believe him to be the go getter that I like. I like the way Curley is going after things, and I know Tom Arnone’s style. I don’t think George is a go getter

  16. ok, said at 7:58 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

we can agree to disagree, and just support whomever gets the shot, remembering the goal is to take out Mallet in Nov..

  17. It would be interesting.. said at 9:00 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

.. if you could get our old friend Honest Abe to chime in, with his spot-on analysis, and county knowledge and historical perspective, this go-round.. any chance of that happening, Art?..

  18. ArtGallagher said at 9:40 pm on March 22nd, 2011:

    It would be interersting….

I have no idea if it is possible to coax Abe out of retirement. His keen insights would certainly add to the debate.
